I would say only go Fed if it gives you the opportunity to oversee something you're passionate about, work/life balance is awesome but you'll get bored without the passion

FWIW (not much), GS15 Step 10 makes $160k in DC and SES Level 1 (highest level) tops out at $185k. The $133k cited by D1 was probably not adjusted for loacality. Either way, you'll make enough to be comfortable (in DC) and have decent work life balance/family life, but long term you'll make far less than consulting. Despite what others say, good govt workers can actually get things done, but you have to be an incrementalist to survive (mentally) long term.

DC locality for GS: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/salary-tables/pdf/2016/DCB.pdf

Where does the govt job put you in 3-5 years?

My advice is no but we are having a debate

Depends on your long term goals and salary needs. If you are into work life balance, not big raises, and a lot of red tape, Go for it.good option

The salary of a new MBA hire is at the top payband in the federal government. A 28 year old senior consultant is making more than a 50 year old federal employee of who has been steadily promoted and is running a department.

Did you account for mental health care spike due to govt job?

Job stability until a brand new politician enacts a bill that cuts your entire department.

like

Yes pay is low. Most of the time consultants are very motivated and don't want the grind of federal jobs or don't need the job security.

Federal jobs; it's hard to get fired, the benefits and retirement are great, and the pay raises, however small, are consistent.

But if I had kids and job security and family time was more important than career level/height and making tons of money, I would donut in a heartbeat. In fact I want to get a few federal projects under my belt in case the day comes that I want to make the switch.

like

A3, completely wrong, GS15 is 160 this year (DC based). SES is 205k (location independent).

like

Personally I'd rather get water boarded. But if you don't mind slow/low pay increases, working with dumb/unmotivated staff and in modern times the whims of Congress shutting down the govt go for it. I do know people who seem happy in public service. I'd prob be just as bored out of my mind working FT for a corporate client.

like

Otherwise unless your a veteran, female, some other minority and disabled you'll have a hard time getting hired

like

If you want to do federal work long term, it probably makes more sense than consulting

Obvious slow growth with not much more to earn

We want to note that current line of work is audit. Similar role in gov but more advising

Lol, it's even worse.... Grade 10, level 10....the highest grade in the federal work force is only $133k. https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/salary-tables/pdf/2016/GS.pdf

Grade 15, level 10*

Life / Career Advice: I applied to medical school since my MCAT score was set to expire, ended up getting into 1 program. I also have an opp to join a well funded/well established Healthtech Startup (6 figure salary w/ equity + benefits) as a BD professional. Any thoughts on what I should do?

I have 13 years work experience with 2 of those in L&D, 3 degrees (BA IO Psych, BBA Marketing, MBA Strategy and Management). Thank you!

Though my current company is an mnc but not that big and no work pressure is there, amazing work life balance. However, there is little to no learning and its very slow, the project is just starting and the client itself is not clear what they want. Do you think I should switch just because its a big 4. Please help me decide. Yoe -3.5

I think this offer is well below par, but curious to hear what you guys think/if you have any comparisons?
