You're doing the right thing! Take time with your child.
The madness will be waiting for you once you come back.
✌️
Nothing is more important than your mental health and family. Be proud of taking this step! IR sucks and is such a drain. You will land in a great role once the time is right. Best of luck! Privacy is always going to be hot, so be confident that your knowledge and experience can be leveraged into a great in-house role. It’s all a numbers game.
IR is hard. No one can tell you whether or not this the right thing for you but I think you should trust yourself. Before you quit, think about if part time is an option. Keep applying. If you do end up quitting, I’d think long and hard about the lifestyle you want and what kind of job will fit your lifestyle. Be aware that your level of experience is a factor in terms of what jobs you’ll be eligible for if you leave - it’s generally easier to fit postings looking for people w 3-5 years privacy experience. If you’re just done with privacy leaving might be a chance to start over in another area of law. Look at cyber claims counsel positions if you like cyber IR work but want easier hours
IR sucks. Commoditized and isn’t valued. Whatever you do, try to broaden beyond it.
For sure. That’s the plan. IR does suck. Haha
If it’s MC then yes you’re making the right decision.
@A1, big law hours requirement for small/mid law pay, bonus structure is garbage, handful of NEPs that treat associates like shit (there’s a few gems among the cohort of goblins), dealing with insurance (where the bulk of the revenue comes from) is an absolute nightmare
Not a lot of exit options because all you do is IR, even though there is a small advisory group within the firm (which management seems to have no desire to grow because insurance money machine go BRRRRRR)
I just left my job to spend time with my kids and couldn’t be happier. I’m confident I’ll find something once I start looking more earnestly.
Take time with your kid. And you’ll find a job.
Also IR sucks lol
Lol, what firm? DM me, if it’s mine - I’ll let you in on everything you need to know
Play up any non-IR experience you have (contract review etc), join IAPP and get a certification or two, and stay in touch with/expand your network. Do those things, take time off, and you’ll land on your feet when you’re ready.

It's not the right thing. You could end up without a job for months or even year's; there are people posting versions of this story all the time.
You are a much weaker candidate without q current job and you no longer have financial security. Just don't work as hard.

They just wanted people to tell them they were making the right decision lol. They weren't looking for advice or any other opinion. It's a pointless post.
Do you have serious saving$ and are willing to spend another 6 months applying?
I got laid off and took 6 months to get a (good) new job. Part of the break was wonderful, and other times it was soul crushing and awful. Unemployment help a ton, which you won't get if you voluntarily leave
Devoted family time is incredible, and I hope you get more of it regardless. But quitting as is is risky
Thank you! This is super helpful. I do have substantial savings so I can take as much time as I need. I appreciate the application process can be tough as I’ve dealt with it before!
I was in your exact same spot and left an IR job without having anything lined up to spend time with my kids. I ended up being without a job for 8 months. I have no regrets but it was tough and I was ready bc I had savings but just something to keep in mind. All those recruiters who were hunting me down while I was employed didn’t really want to talk when I left. Good luck to you!!
Thanks!! Good luck to you, really wish all works for the best for you. I wanted to get into a specific practice area and got there ;)
