Litigation tends to be slow around the holidays, but we all have end of year billables to meet. What kind of stuff do you work on for billable hrs while courts and clients are closed?

I split my practice between litigation and transactional stuff. But we, oddly, just got hit with discovery in 3 different cases, so I’m currently doing that. Also prepping for motion practice that will start early January, working on pro bono matters, and getting my arms around project documentation for a project we are writing comment letters on. Honestly, if you’re hurting for hours, I just straight up ask people if they need help. The answer is always yes.

Don’t know where you work, but for me I find there is always something that needs to be done. Your email account is really a to-do list with two hundred reminders coming in daily. Think about it.

I can see why you’re a Senior Litigation Shareholder lol 💪🏽

For the last couple of years I’ve had some sort of monster discovery deadline a few days before Christmas so it hasn’t been an issue. Seems to happen a lot. I also think that once that’s done I’ll do some background reading/research on the case that I haven’t been able to do because I’ve been reacting to discovery fire drills.

I try to start January deposition prep and briefs early, because January is always more hectic than I plan for. My firm is totally accepting that we have no billable hours toward the end of the year though. As long as you’ve hit target, you’re allowed to take it easy or try to improve your charitable hours.

Case law research, anything that can be prepped for January

I work in medical malpractice defense - there are ALWAYS med recs sitting on my desk waiting to be analyzed and summarized. These next two weeks are full of that.

Our firm gives full billable credit for pro bono work. That makes for good work in slow periods. Free Legal Answers online makes for a really good source of time that I can do at home around/over the holidays.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

Does anyone have experience working for a ALSP? How does compensation work (pay and benefits)? Are you an employee or technically an IC? Do you have billable requirements like at a firm? Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

Mental health is busy, looking for tips to help manage tasks, currently I supervise 12 therapists in 3 different departments that are all different with unique dynamics in each dept. How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
