You could check out the International Steampunk Symposium in Cincinnati, Ohio; or the Gaslight Gathering in San Diego, California. Additionally, there are a number of smaller events throughout the year that may be worth considering as well.
Both of these genres have dedicated conventions that feature fan-made costumes, art installations, panel discussions, movie screenings, and more. Additionally, virtual events like online galleries or cosplay contests are often for those unable to attend an in-person event. By advertising your forum at such events you can draw attention from potential new members and generate interest in your community
I don't know much about the subject, but surely any comic-con or convention of that style should work for you.
Do you know where the community usually hangs out online? FB groups? Forum? Instagram? Try to get the attention of a few from existing communities, and once they are active in your community gently encourage them to spread the word.
