Looking to pivot to a new agency to get exposure to different clients/type of work; due for promo from AAE to AE (1.5 years as an AAE) but won't come for another ~6 months at current agency - know they think I'm ready but company not in a position to promo yet. Any tips as I consider this change? Agencies doing great work lately to look into?

I understand your concern, that’s why I usually apply for jobs that I wouldn’t take and only use the interview as an opportunity to hone my interview answers and comfortability. It’s common practice to talk to recruiters who reach out and take interviews even if you’re happy w where you are, it certainly doesn’t mean that you have to make the jump or leave your current job until you’re ready.

like

Was in the same position but nearing 2 years. Make the jump if you find an agency that feels right - you’ll most likely be compensated more than receiving an internal promotion

A lot of resignations take teams by surprise. I think in your situation, they’ll understand because they know you want to grow faster than they’re able to give you at the moment. Wanting professional growth is something everyone can understand and will respect you for.

like

If you’re in a major market like chicago, LA or NYC, move agencies. Even a internal promotion at your level will net you a small raise.

Only apply to AE roles. Don’t settle for AAE now, since if you take a lateral move they won’t promote you for a while.

100% - I’m in a position to be an AE now/soon so definitely only going to look for an AE role

Also concerned about leaving a safe job / client and moving to new and then being the first one to go if there’s another wave of COVID furloughs/layoffs

This is very helpful - thank you! Hopefully I can get the honest picture by asking that

Had an interview with a recruiter who laughed at me when I said I was looking for a senior role. Laundry service, I’m sorry, but you should start hiring people who respect people.

Had final interview at startup with CEO and would-be direct supervisor and at the end they were using language like "you'll be our first [name of role]"... Does this mean I basically got it, or should I not read into it? I'll find out soon anyway, but appreciate any speculation 😅

Trying to exit into FAANG but know it may be a long shot involving a handful of rejections. Meanwhile got approached by a number of recruiters for a) smaller emerging startup <but need to shift geo>, and b) major banks for in-house strategy. I’ll proceed with interviews with a) since it will give me a flavour of tech recruiting, but should I even go through with interview process for b)? Thoughts? Fyi, have not interviewed in 4+ years!
