Making the move from mid law to big law, I am a little nervous about the high billable hours and expectations. Anyone have any words of advice or their own personal experiences?

I’d also consider the expectations of availability beyond just hours. I worked in both and smaller firms. Currently in midlaw and depending on the practice area and clients, the availability expectations are lower in smaller and midsize firms vs big law.

like

^ this. The hours are not what makes biglaw tough. It’s the 24/7 availability nature of it.

like

I’ve gone backwards. Big law to mid law. Prepare for high expectations.

In house counsel now. Different drama but more tolerable for me. 😅

What did you bill at your old firm? Probably the best advice is to make friends with a PA or a junior/someone your level so they can show you the ropes.

like

Did this recently. Took me a couple of weeks to not be super anxious all the time about being responsive, and to find ways to find workout and house chores routine. I like having go-to responses for (1) acknowledging receipt but (2) not immediately jumping on a matter. Also blocking out times for deep work (no email).

like

I’ve gone back and forth between Big and Mid and the most significant differences are resources and expectations. You are generally expected to do much more and be much more available in Big.

My body hurts, my stomach is in knots, my head hurts. How is it that I have to mend a broken heart but also meet my billable hours lmao

Curious to know what other firm's bonus structures are, particularly those with billable requirements of 1900 and below. Trying to understand what the norm is and figure out if associates at my firm are getting screwed. thanks

There is almost nowhere to find reliable bonus information on Canadian firms. I’ve heard of year end bonuses ranging from 10-50% this year (not including Covid bonuses). Let’s start a thread posting year of call, rough billable hours worked and bonus as a percent of salary.

5 year call. 1850 hours. 10%.

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

I currently work at a medium sized firm and have about two years experience in personal injury litigation. The billable hours and lack of work life balance are really getting to me and I am looking to switch to something else out of litigation, preferably in house. I am also looking to relocate to a different state. How do I go about properly marketing myself to companies that might not take my relocation and minimal experience seriously?

How does your firm measure utilization? I work for a small boutique that defines it as utilization = number of billable hours/2,080 and full bonus payout occurs at 80% plus.

Recently lateraled as a public defender in HCOL area to ID in LCOL area for $$$. I’ve been at the job a little over a month. My concerns are that I’m getting very little guidance or mentorship, and I’m worried about not hitting billable hours (2000 requirement but I am just over 80 for the first month). I am only in charge of a ~5 cases atm and struggle with figuring out the next steps, etc. I’ve met all my deadlines that have come up. Thoughts or advice?

Why do many associates at top tier firms stay to make Partner when they can go in-house in tech and make around the same, even long term? For example, you can make near 400-550k in-house at Google, Netflix, FB with 8-10 years of exp. More senior than that in-house, it can easily break $1M.

I understand this might sound a little snobby but I'm not trying for it to come off that way. I've been around impressive people throughout my adult life. T-14 and big law have placed me in the company of some really accomplished individuals. It likely skewed the bar in terms of what I find as impressive.

My girlfriend's sister works at a Fortune 500 company and views herself as very accomplished. She's not a good person. I also don't find her impressive so I don't particularly try
