This has happened to me twice earlier in my career. Once at a bank. The bank's policy is you're guaranteed a "job" when you return but didn't mean the same job when you left. In essence I got her job as the next in rank. I looked at it as a live audition that became permanent. It was a good run until the bank took over another bank and closed the Loan Center and moved out of California. It is completely normal. If you look at your job description, companies tend to always put under responsibilities "as assigned."

Yeah, this has been the norm with my last two companies. As the previous user stated, this is a trial run to see how promotable you are while keeping the workload within the same department.
Yes, this is normal. In one of my previous role I had to cover for my manager while he was out. It resulted in me getting a promotion.
