Let the analyst talk to the manager and i suggest you stay out of it. If they really are unhappy, they will voice their concerns to the manager.
The Consultant IS their manager in this scenario? Did you not read what I read
A lot of it is winning their trust and letting them know that you’ve noticed that they’ve been less than happy. I would give them the opportunity to agree or disagree to that. If they say no, there’s nothing you can do except maybe bring it up again when their unhappiness impacts their work. If they say yes, then I’d want to know why. Doesn’t have to be detailed, but knowing what’s going on with your analyst is important. They’re a person too. Maybe it’s depression or boredom. Maybe it’s disillusionment, and you need to provide more context around their work. Trust is the most important thing though.
As their manager, you need to start with not demotivating them. After that, it’s really up to them to decide to be motivated.
Have a talk with them, and find out where they are and where they want to be (work-wise). Then talk to your manager and see if you can come to some kind of agreement on a development plan for the analyst. I’m in this boat myself right now and feel like I’m beating my head against a brick wall with my manager.
It’s really not fair to the analyst, because their skill sets are totally different from what they’re doing. But I want to do what I can to make sure they’re happy and have opportunities to grow professionally.
How long is the engagement?
An an analyst that what thrown in a highly technical role with no hardware or software experience I had an amazing mentor that explain and help me out learn what I couldn’t on my own
I always find there are at least one thing on any engagement that is interesting for most people. I would find that one thing they would like to do (or more) and see if I can add it to their queue. My first job out of grad school was in a purely technical role....my opposite was a CS major and I was Econ. 🙄. But I found there were aspects I enjoyed once I had a fuller understanding of the program.
