My clients care about one thing - taxes. As a third year corporate associate, what are the best ways I can build my tax knowledge without pursuing an LLM?

Does your firm have a subscription to Tax Notes?

like

The nutshell books are very good high level reviews… international tax in a nutshell, corporate tax in a nutshell… and then you can deepen with specific books. Also checkpoint BNA Section is good

like

Yeah for checkpoint if your firm has the subscription, you basically go to the code section (example 351 or 368 corporate reorganizations) and then there will be buttons to get BNA portfolios on that particular code section, very helpful

Talk to your tax team. Don’t try to dabble in tax.

I went to law school with someone who, after graduation, neglected to file taxes for several years. Ultimately, he was eventually able to square things up with the IRS, but I think an LLM would have been a cheaper way to gain that knowledge...

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

I work at a Financial Institution and have recently been approached about a Director role with my prior company. It’s a great opportunity but I have 2 young kids (Preschool/Elementary ages) and I don’t want to sacrifice time with them for career advancement. I would love to hear from working moms in senior leadership roles to understand if it’s possible to balance both, or is it best to wait a few more years? Not happy currently and looking to move, but unsure of pursuing lateral vs. a promotion

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

I figured this bowl being specific to Texas would understand importance of oil and gas industry.

For anyone who’s taken / passed the CFE, is it worth paying for the full exam prep course or would studying the fraud examiners manual suffice?

like

I was wondering if the review course “CPE Self Study Course” for the CFF was enough preparation to study and pass the CFF exam. The CFE review course was enough and like if you get a question wrong it explains it well so that when it comes up in a different way in the real exam you can still get it. But when I saw the outline for the CFF material and there seems to be a lot of topics so I was wondering if the review course was sufficient considering this exam is also multiple choice. Thanks!
