I so want to become better and be valuable to an agency. I listen to leadership podcasts and work on my inner stuff so I can one day be effective. Yet, I am given no hope in this role and wasn’t in the last. I plan to leave and work for myself as soon as I can because this industry either uses people up or doesn’t see the use in them whatsoever.
I’m guessing you work at Vayner?
Have you addressed these concerns with your manager? How did they respond?
I have not been shy in past positions to speak up, but when it feels like their management style is purely based on ego and inexperience, that’s inner work they need to do. I have slid my desires for growth into the conversation though, although I wasn’t asked. There’s this thing in advertising where people seem to think if they have a higher title that they’ve earned it and don’t have more work/learning to do. Not all, but many.
Instead of telling them about your desires for professional growth — have you ever scheduled a meeting solely to ask about what you can do to be better in your current position?
You can learn a lot about yourself from an earnest, no-holding-back review.
If you have the guts for it, tell them in advance you want a performance review and say you’d also like anonymous feedback from peers as well.
There may be a disconnect between how you see yourself and how everyone else there sees you. You need to close that gap.
