This worries me too. Memory loss has been a concern for a few years now.. My husband jokes that it's dementia. I'm only 26 😬
One thing I can say without a doubt that has actually HELPED my memory very noticeably is increasing my physical activity. I do a boot camp 3x a week and lift and/or run as I’m able on weekends. I started this at the end of February and my recall and my retention are much better. I am 46. And this in spite of being mildly sleep deprived trying to squeeze it all in. Even a 20 minute daily walk would probably help most people where memory is concerned
Also, best way to stay awake - cold water. I cut caffeine cold turkey and replaced with water when I did PA and it changed my life. Hydration is super important to body and brain functionality
This speaks to me like crazy. My wife says I need to get checked out as it could be serious. Do you all really think it’s just work? (I’m 29!!)
I'd probably go myself. From the other hand I'd expect someone in our profession have statistically less chances to get alzheimer's. Maybe I'm that unlucky 1%.
How much are you sleeping? I’ve always heard symptoms like this can often be attributed to a lack of sleep
I try not to have less than 6 hrs, and really cannot physically go more than 2-3 nights with less than 5. I think I'm better than many on this front, so I don't think it's sleep deprivation.
Wow it’s crazy to see how many people have this problem. I thought I was the only one
Memory loss/Brain fog is a symptom of both anxiety & depression. If you are forgetting a bunch of things definitely go discuss with a doctor or therapist. It can also be a lack of sleep which PA is infamous for
Yes, when I get anxious/depressed cognitive function is one of the first things affected.
Have you been taking any medication lately? They could have terrible side effects and may cause the short-term memory loss and foggy brain you are talking about. Been taking Benadryl for almost a year (one pill at night to help me sleep) and that messed up with my short term memory and experienced what you just described. Did not put the 2 and 2 together until my neurologist pointed out that sleeping pills like Benadryl are anticholinergic and they block acetylcholine which is a neurotransmitter important for brain functions such as memory and learning. Once I stop taking it, I got my brain back in a few months. Sleep (without medication) is extremely important. 6 hours is not enough to keep a healthy mind and body. We need about 7-8 hours to function at our full potential and avoid DNA damage. I recommend the book ‘Why We Sleep’ by Matthew Walker. Life changing! Exercise is extremely important because it pumps oxygen into your brain. Incorporating even a 15-30 minutes walk per day would be very helpful. I hope you feel better soon.
Of course! Happy to help. The recovery process will take time, but don’t get discouraged. I think it took about one year to get back to my old self before medication. To overcome anxiety (which caused the whole medication streak in the first place) I combined Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Nutrient Therapy. My body was missing so many nutrients to be able to function well and could only figured out after a comprehensive test. That is how I got my sleep back the natural way. Hope this helps. Happy to chat more if you want via PM. Take care!
I blame it on constant overload, multitasking and the amount of information I'm required to juggle and filter through at my work. I used to have excellent memory, could memorize stories word by word. I'm scared.
I’ve been experiencing the same thing. But I’m attributing it to age. They say your fluid intelligence peaks at 25. I’m in my mid 30’s now, and am quite worried at how my cognition seems to be deteriorating.
well yes and now. I'd say I'm OK with being slower overall - I can see my associates and I understand I cannot compete with their reaction etc. But man,not forgetting the sentence in the middle of it! Went completely blank, and worse, I can almost predict when it happens, there is a millisecond of something in my brain that allows me to know yes, thus is happening. Like those who faint can alert that they are about to faint.
Same :(
I have the same problem - it stresses me out so much and I know coffee helps keep me alert but I tend to drink too much of it just to get through the day
For me this is not something coffee can help me with.
Guys how much sleep are you getting? Memory loss due to lack of proper sleep is super common.
If you need caffeine in the morning to function, you may not be getting good sleep. A full restful 7-8h is needed for mental health. Sometimes changing sleep habits and bed/pillow etc helps for quality too.
I totally get this and often it's probably sleep related and the brain cells I've lost from the addictions I'm battling and my depression. BUT it also could be a sign of sleep apnea. if anyone has ever told you that you snore too loud or stop breathing while you sleep you likely have it. I stopped breathing 37 times an hour before my CPAP. definitely affects cognition and I feel a ton better on the mental health and cognition front even if not completely better.
Welcome to my life
