Naive question here from immigrant (on way to citizenship). All my future funds (investments, 401k, 529), are in Vanguard. What happens if the company goes belly up? Am I screwed?

I wouldn’t worry about stock or mutual fund investments. But holding liquid cash in a bank...I believe the FDIC only insures about $250k per account per bank if the bank were to go bankrupt, so don’t hold all your liquid cash in one place once you’re over about $250k.

Lol yeah that will be armageddon

No - the accounts are owned by the participants and separated from the company financials so shouldn’t be impacted

Potentially different story for other types of accounts

Thank you!

Fishes honest opinion needed. Me and My so presently live in Arkansas, living in our first home with a child 4 year, both of us recently changed our jobs and have HHI ~ 420K, current mortgage 1600/month. We are looking to move to Dallas and thinking of buying a house ~996K with a 15% down. Questions -
1. Should we go for house of that budget? We can afford, but asking based on market.
2. Should we down 15% or just 5% ? Or go for 20% ?

Is it too late in our lives to jump into a mortgage?

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.

$530k HHI, $250k cash on hand, $1.2M investments/retirement. Plan to buy $800-900k house as our first home, but thinking of the best approach given rates today. My thinking is that we (i) put $200k+ down and get a 5/1 ARM. (ii) put everything we save moving forward toward paying down the principal (after maximizing retirement accounts). Should be able to do $100k per year. (iii) If rates go down below 4.5ish % for 15 year fixed, refinance and stop aggressive payment. Thoughts on this approach?
