The difference is usually to do with whether you manage a team or not. A Manager, Program Manager, would often lead a team, whereas an senior program manager is an individual contributor. Not the case 100% of the time, but about 70-80%.
Pay is usually similar. This is because the pay is determined by your level and these roles are usually the same level. For an SPM you would be an L6 - quick google search can show the salary for that level.
At Amazon this generally falls under the RME organization.
If you are a manager or senior manager, generally you will come in at L6 so senior program manager, unless you are very experienced (15+ years).
Your comp structure will be very different with salary and cash bonus making up the majority of your compensation in years 1 and 2 and then salary and vesting RSU making up the majority of compensation in years 3 and 4. You will generally make less in years 1 and 2 and more in years 3 and 4.
It’s pretty common if you are coming in from consulting to make less money during year 1 and 2 but then more during years 3 and 4, so you even out or do better than you would have versus remaining in consulting. This is all highly dependent on your current compensation and Amazon RSU appreciation.
I just wrapped my time at Amazon and moved into a new role external to Amazon, so I cannot.
I was a bar raiser as well so unless I had personally worked with someone, I generally didn’t refer people, I only bring that up because that is a fairly common approach at Amazon.
