I agree with A1! Things will eventually pick up again, and typically hours balance out at the end of year. In our profession, you should definitely enjoy the down time when you get it.

With that being said, if you’re wanting to break into a new practice area or develop a relationship with a certain partner, consider using the downtime to reach out to those partners who practice in areas you’re interested in and ask them for work/recommendations on how to prepare to enter that practice area (books to read, statutes to familiarize yourself with, etc.). Even if the work isn’t there, you’ll be on their radar in the future, and they’ll appreciate the initiative.

Thanks, A3! I found out a few hours after my post.

16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Any advice for transitioning from ID to something in-house or even out of lawyering completely? The billable hours and “unlimited PTO” (aka no real time off) are killing me and the billable mentality is creeping into my personal life (every day thoughts like “If I can finish the grocery shopping in .8, then I have an extra .2 to walk the dog.”) I just don’t feel the billable life is the best choice for my mental health or personal life (newlywed). But no idea how to start making the transition…

This may be just a naive/dumb question, but how do you relax when you’ve got a really stressful file? I’m a junior and I’ve been putting in ~10ish billable hours a day recently, which is more than I’m used to. I have a question about mid-size Philadelphia law firms. Does anyone have any insight about what life is like (culture, pay, billable hours, cases, WFH, perks, etc.) as a junior partner/senior associate/of counsel in the litigation department at the following firms: Montgomery McCracken, Schnader Harrison, Stradley Ronon, Dilworth Paxson, Klehr Harrison?

When work is created for you - staff. When you create work - Partner / MD / Principal or what whatever you call people who create billable hours for you 👍

smart

Partners/shareholders - how many hours are you expected to bill on work vs client dev and firm/associate management? My firm keeps saying that "there's no such thing as a relationship partner" and everyone top-to-bottom is expected to log 2000 hours/year on real billable work. Marketing etc is done on top of that. Is that normal?! If so, I'm going to have to totally rethink my life goals.

Today marks two weeks from Milbank. DPW, you had two full weeks, which generally translates to roughly at the least 100 billable hours of any given associate’s time. I’m sure you are charging out your midlevels at at the least 1k an hour, so that’s easily 100k * whatever realization percentage you have. That’s more than enough to make up for whatever flimsy 5-10k raise we are asking for, no? I just went to bed at 2am and woke up at 6 for 4 fire drills. Let this misery end, Sir DPW, esquire!

Here is a tax question bothering.
My friend is an IT employee and his income is around 7lakh per annum. He is borrowing around 80K per month from his parents and investing it in RD for 9 months as he needs the amount in 10 months for something.

Now, the question is, he is already having income as taxable and if he borrows a total of 7,20,000 rupees and save it, will it also be considered as taxable income added to his actual income? Will this amount be calculated while filling tax?
