Listen. If an amazing opportunity presented itself on March 1st, bye 👋🏼
It's not as big of a deal as you think and people do it a lot
They'll probably lure you out with a "going away party", then they'll beat you mercilessly
If it's good, jump. You are replaceable. Opportunities that come by are not.
Like really in the middle? We had people leave in April and people leave in January but I don't think anyone has left actually in the middle. Likely because they didn't have time to interview during that period. As a team member, I would be pissed because my office is understaffed so you wouldn't be replaced and work would fall to the team to complete. But you also need to put you first and if an opportunity comes up that is right for you, you need to pull the trigger
One of our experienced associates quit in the middle of October (our busy season is October to Feb) and everyone was cool with it. One of our seniors quit in the middle of December and it pissed everyone off in our market. If you (1) like your team, (2) are actually an integral member, and (3) are only passively looking, do not quit in busy season. If you're not that critical and you dislike your team anyway, just ditch.
You need to do what's best for you. Our office fired 6 people in early April this year and 3 of them were in-charges on jobs that hadn't issued yet. Do you think the firm cared how mad people would be?
I don't agree with the bridge burning comments at all. The situation varies depending on how your relationships are with your team and the quality of your work product. I'm in week one of my last two weeks and it's our busy season right now. No one is out slashing my tires or being nasty to me because I'm quitting now. Three people in management reached out to see if I could be persuaded to stay. The reality is this: firms want to be able to leverage the relationship they have with you, especially if you leave for an industry job, so they can make SALES.
I'm a manager and I don't care. Everyone is replaceable.
@EY 2-that's true but I'm wondering how the seniors and staff that work with you feel when you treat them like they are replaceable
It's a pretty terrible thing to do to your coworkers since they will have to pick up your work on addition to their own.
I understand that sometimes opportunities come up, but to quit in the middle of busy season shows you don't care about your teammates and will likely burn bridges on the way out the door.
This is a 12. If the opportunity is that good you ultimately have to do what's best for you, just know you're highly to be burning bridges that could prove very valuable in the future. I'd take a hard look and make sure you're 110% confident the opportunity is really that unique (every recruiter tells you every opportunity is unique).
Doubtful you're that important. Not trying to be an asshole but "busy season" work is often the equivalent of robotics; you can be replaced in a day.
AS1, treating someone as replaceable is a totally different thing. I don't throw my staff away.
I recognize that we are all replaceable, but there is no hiring in the middle of busy season so at that point you're only replaceable by resources who are already being overworked. Pretty sure the bridges you burn are peers who have to clean up after you.
