I know employers aren’t supposed to ask your current salary anymore, but asking what your “salary range” is feels like essentially the same thing.
I hate to be the first one to throw out a number because you may end up either giving them sticker shock OR undervaluing yourself.
Lately I’ve been going with “My salary is negotiable depending on the role and responsibilities. Are you able to share the salary range for this position?” So far throwing the ball back in their court usually yields a number so we can determine whether to keep talking (about other benefits, etc.), but interested in hearing how others approach this.
I was as honest as possible—“I’m currently making XX and frankly SF’s high cost of living can make it hard to know what is a reasonable amount per role and company as it can vary greatly. I’m open to making a lateral move depending on responsibility and experience but am looking for [insert range].”
It worked 9/10 to get the recruiter on my side to fight for higher money because they as well are dealing with that dumb inflated market skewing every mindset and conversation. It also allowed them to be transparent upfront and say knowing your desired range our cap is actually XX. To each their own though.
Interesting. I usually say “I’m at $X now, and I’m looking to step up.” And I make X 10k higher than it really is.
I do the same thing. Usually does the trick
