Do it straight out of the book, with guidance from a sponsor. Don't think about the outcome or follow-up conversations, just write it down.
This is great advice. Do it the way the book outlines it. Give it the time it deserves but don’t drag it out. My sponsor told me it really is just an inventory, a list. Not therapy.
1) be honest
2) it doesn't have to be perfect, you are striving to come up with a complete list but if you miss something, that's OK, you can come back and do it later. We can all work these steps for the rest of our (much happier) lives
3) I suggest using a worksheet. Ask your sponsor if they recommend one. Otherwise you can Google. The hazeldon one is good.
4) 4/5 really do work if you work them, but don't expect a white light moment. For some people they see some things and feel some relief right away, for others it comes weeks or months later. It took me two weeks to feel/understand.
Huge congrats, good for you. I think that it will take time and a lot of quiet reflection. That's a hard thing for those of us who have dealt with addiction and desire a lot of stimulus. I would utilize walking meditations, those have always been very helpful for me
The 12 and 12 can also be helpful for the 4th step (and in general): https://www.aa.org/twelve-steps-twelve-traditions

To follow up on this - I’m reading the 12 and 12 and the relevant portion of the big book this week with my sponsor.
That's great and a sign of a good sponsor. Be as brutally honest as you can - try to remove your ego from the process and just pour it out. The more honest you are, the more you dive deep, the better the outcomes. Each subsequent step builds upon the previous, so it's important to be fearless and vulnerable. Best of luck to you!
The only wrong way to do a 4th step is by not doing one. Follow the big book and guidance from your sponsor and your good. Keep at it!!!!
