One of the most important things I've learned from life after service is that the friends I made while in are more dependable than civilian friends. I can call one of my friends I knew from my service, and they will do whatever they can. Or just let me vent when I need it. I hope this doesn't sound mean, but my civilian friends don't have that mindset. My friends who are still in service know I would drop anything to be there if they needed it. Same with those who are out.

How does everyone bill for family law matters? Do you always bill hourly or is there some flat fee, monthly or quarterly fee structure that could work, even in contested matters? I have cases that the clients end up spending $20-$40,000 on a contested divorce and this is really out of their budget. I feel that if my firm could charge a flat fee of $10-$15,000, it would still be beneficial from a client predictability and volume standpoint and would generate more referrals.

Wife doesn’t like her job at her law firm (2YoE). She wants to have kids sooner rather than later and we had agreed that we would both be working parents. For my own reasons, I don’t want her to be a SAHM. I’m trying to think of ways to have our cake and eat it too. What if we opened up a daycare? Anyone have experience running a daycare? My wife is in sales at Mercedes and she has been averaging $200k a year and growing YoY. She loves her job, however she works long days and barely gets time off. We plan on having kids within the next year or two, and it’s highly u likely that she’ll be able to keep her current gig. We want to find a career that allows her to work remote or that at least gives her a better work life balance so that she can see her kids grow up. Should she get certifications to give her a shot at adtech?Too late?

How do I figure out spending with my SO? Initially I was paying for 90% of stuff (no actual bills, just going out). I talked to her and said we need to be more even. She was never proactive. She kind of got offended but we ended on a good note to split things. It went well for a couple weeks but now it's back to normal. Take victories and defeats as equals! Nothing will teach young soldiers more than making mistakes in the heat of battle that almost cost you your life. If you're still breathing, there's something to learn. Listen to it.

For those that have been in awhile and looking closely at retirement. Are you switching careers or if you did how did it go? What advice would you give someone four years out from retirement?

Am I the only one who fears a third world war is among us? I've been studying the circumstances that led to WW1 and WW2, and let me tell you, we're not as far as they were. I hope the better judgment of people avoids such a catastrophic outcome.
