The client shouldn’t pay but you should get credit internally for the work.
get everything in writing, but ultimately you probably should just comply. but i would avoid this partner/think about reporting it unless they are a top dog at your firm.
Tell partner to cut his hours for first time clients, first time working on new deal terms, first time everything he does. What a ridiculous request. Only partners with small books sometimes do this. Ask more senior partner for advice on how to handle this
This shouldn’t happen but unfortunately happens all the time
It’s more about the partner failing to manage their client’s expectations about the bill than the associate. It’s never the rain makers with the important clients doing this IME
If management heard about this, they would flip out. Associates shouldn’t cut their own time, but there’s not much you can do in this situation. I was in this position and lateraled. It wasn’t the only reason for me to lateral but was one of them
Thanks folks. I’m going to see just how much he wants to cut them. Best part is, he asked ME to email intake and tell them “I made a mistake” so he can keep his budget in check. Will not work with him again.
Keep evidence of the request in non firm locations in case you lose access someday
I’m sure the ABA is on your side of this, but practically I’d work for someone else if at all possible.
First month as an associate: Bill for everything no matter how long it takes!!
Six months in: why did you bill this many hours for research!?
Rising Star
I have been asked to do this. I kept a chart of how many hours things actually took vs what I reported to the client (so what was billed to them). But I still input into the firm billing software how many hours it actually took. The firm paid for the difference.
Don’t work for this guy again, but also don’t make a fuss. Take it as a loss and move on.
Besides trying to “stay within budget” or “keeping the client happy,” partners are trying to preserve their realization rate in an effort to become equity partner. Slimy whatever the reason is.
