4 years from SM to Partner at Big4 ..:although achievable is highly unlikely.... especially for an experienced hire SM. Timeline is usually between 5-8 years.
I have seen that happen only once where Big4 was trying to build a practice so needed all the talent etc.
Plan for 8 if you make it in 5 you did extremely well. Four is outstanding.

4 years is actually a best case scenario but realistically it will be 5+ years. If you are a rainmaker and can get into the inner circle of “Partner Makers”, it’s possible to do it in 4 years.
If someone is making P in 2 years, it’s because they were wrongly brought in at a lower level
It’s possible, but there’s a good chance in practice you’ll sit around for a while, get offered a non-equity position, and eventfully make a run at Partner at a different firm. 😬
Director... You'll likely move faster or as fast as your peers. There is a push for URMs.
At KPMG strategy you’re a director for 3 and md for 3 before making partner and that’s considered fast track. There’s a lot that goes into it, but generally switching firms does add some time to partner track but in a 40 year career it’s not material. If you have support to be promoted at your current firm I’d stay, if you don’t then jump ship.
Simplistic advice from a random internet person...wishing you success.
In my anecdotal experience at D, 4 years is actually on the quicker end to make PMD, with most being 5-7 years for homegrown SMs. As an external hire, I wouldn't be surprised if you'd end up on the slower end.
That’s crazy to think - given MBB timelines are like 4 years from manager to partner.
Everyone I know at Deloitte, said expect a min of 5 years. Curious, what does the comp look like at D for SM?

P1 - I made Partner at Deloitte seven years ago but don’t work there anymore. Based upon my experience, protecting profits is not the reason why it takes 5+ years at D but it’s just their competitive model, bureaucracy and politics. In my current Firm, it’s very similar timeline. There are some people who have been waiting for 8 years due to the lack of growth in their competency, personal readiness etc. I have seen some people making it within 3 years, especially if you are a homegrown high performing individual.
I’m at another Big 4 and found the timeline varies a great deal based on practice, experience/performance and personality. The legacy strategy firms tend to promote faster than Advisory businesses, not all incoming SM’s are created equal and some get promoted to Partner in a year or two while others stay at SM seemingly forever and it definitely takes an outgoing personality and likability to quickly build a network / clout. Ultimately I think promotion timeline is very much a case-by-case basis.
And, yes, it’s quite amazing how slow the promotion timelines are at Big 4 versus MBB..... It’s a risk-taking versus risk-averse culture difference IMO. It really makes Big 4 a pretty awful place to make a career.... SM doesn’t pay well enough to live a nice lifestyle in a HCOL area and, since you’re stuck there forever, you end up working crazy hours while getting paid less than peers w easy 9-5 advertising jobs that took their career for the “lifestyle” - what a farce.
They’re the only one who will take me 🤷♀️
If you believe on your self and have proved worthy of it in current engagement than never settle on low.
Ha
I am currently weighing offers from D and boutique firm. So at D, it will take minimum 5 years based on this thread... but I think the timeline can be shorter at this boutique firm.
I am not worried about the total comp at the moment, but what other factors should I consider?
In agreement with D2. An an experienced hire, M. It’s been hard to find a park to run with even at M level. And when you’re up for promo, who and how you go to market is a factor. The emphasis is the Deloitte way.
Yes - it will take at the very least 3 years and it’s only good for you. They carefully look at 3 years of performance when you are up for ppmd. You being new to the firm won’t have anything to compare against with other veterans in the firm with 5+ experience at that level. You will also need to build a strong network which takes time. 3-4 yrs is minimum unless you are coming with a very strong pipeline of work/ network of clients to sell you work or a product you have built outside and now D is acquiring it.
OP, what group is this in? I’m still in a holding pattern for a SM offer. Being told focus is on hires at manager level at the moment.
And remember experience professional struggle in Deloitte for first few years. It takes time to build up your internal network. Home grown peers will have this advantage over you.
