Partners - how “hard” is it really to be fired as a Partner? For those that were actually fired as a Partner, what was the circumstances they said was the reason?

Knew of a partner from a few years ago who was fired for years of fraudulent expenses. Not talking about the occasional dinner, talking about family trips to Disney.

One partner shouted (lost temper) at client. Was anyway not pulling weight and sitting on other managers without adding any value. No innovation, just sitting on a fat account. And then lost it at that account’s main sponsor. Was asked to leave. Another one was a weird case where partner basically went awol for a year. No client emails. No engagement with team. No idea what was happening. Had to be looked into and eventually asked to leave. Another one was a external hire at P level and was a complete cultural mis fit. Was creating divide in company and at Sr leadership

Partners can and do get laid off and fired Analysts/Associates have trouble believing it. It’s a business decision as always. If a partner isn’t pulling their weight and/or creates undue amounts of risk, they’ll be exited.

Miss your numbers for 2 years as an experienced Partner or MD and you are going to be gone. Miss the first three, same thing. Harrassment or retaliation will get you fired as well. Very different than even 2 years ago let alone 5. Most times it will be called retirement, and not obvious to staff below Principal or SM.

Hmm, I had a Partner retire so suddenly that direct reports didn’t even know until they got the abrupt auto-response, “I have retired.” Now I’m wondering if there was more! 👀

Based on P1’s response: 1) don’t be a d*ck to clients; 2) show up to work; 3) don’t be a d*ck to everyone else in the company. To the original question of how ‘“hard” it is to get fired, I’m feeling pretty good should I ever get there...

We’re trying to hire “name brands” whether it’s MBB, Ivies, etc. in TAS even if some parts of the personalities are questionable. This one lateral M partner came into an engagement and preached to all the clients about the big picture strategy and tried to completely change the company strategy during a merger (that’s not how we do it in TAS). Clients refused to work with him. He also chain smoked with the staff. Was not fired but taken off engagement.

Arrow Icon

I’ve seen many big4 MD’s fired for missing #’s. Gotta pull your weight at every level

Arrow Icon

How long does it take to get rid of MDs that miss their numbers? 2 years? 3?

Arrow Icon

If fired, do they retain any equity? Or does the partnership buy out their shares?

Arrow Icon

Usually a partner has to have their shares bought out by the firm, since technically they put up their own capital for those shares

Help! I’m a decent teacher but admin has a target on my back this year & NO ONE knows why. I’m receiving my second write-up for an absolutely ridiculous reason (my rep agrees that it’s total crap but they manipulate the wording just-so to make it sound legit), but a third & I can be fired. I have to finish the year where I am to have my student loans forgiven. I’m terrified to go to work every day. A large part of my future is on the line & I’m stuck. It’s so unjust but I have no recourse.

I got laid off in January and have been trying to find a new job since. I keep making it to the phone interview and sometimes a second interview, but always get ghosted. It’s so disheartening. I have too much experience for an internship, and I have too little to be the top choice for copywriter roles. I know I’m a good writer, I know what I’m capable of, but it’s so exhausting trying to convince people. They always like my book but it’s never enough to get the gig. What can I do?
