HBR has several series on leadership, emotional intelligence, etc.
Ultimately, be empathetic, fair and transparent. Never make a decision without understanding both sides of the story. Give people benefit of the doubt. Get to know them. Be there when they need you. Treat them with respect. Praise in public and scorn in private. Enable them and don’t micromanage. Don’t punt issues, even if they’re difficult.
The Human Centipede… learn to process incongruent inputs and make those deal with your outputs down the line.
Not to be confused with the very hungry caterpillar, which is about letting nature run its course and maturing into a healthy and elegant butterfl… leader.

Never read a book on the topic. I instead thought about what I appreciated in my various managers & leaders as I was growing in my organization and tried adopting those behaviors.
Thanks Principal for clarifying. I'm glad
Honestly, reading book will not help you!! Its a cute thought though. I have read hundreds of book on management. It just made me bit arrogant. Bookish knowledge and practical application are very different. On top of it , the self help and leadership books are so much full of fluff. Many writes these books as a source of revenue.
One of the best advise that I can think of you is if you can perform your managers work on your own. If he’s leading a meeting , see if you can lead it on your own. If he’s an SME in any topic check if you can become one. Also, start managing a portion of work independently without the help of your manager.
I’m getting the practical experience on my project now leading an analyst while driving the work in my work stream. I’m simply looking for additional ways to develop. Books, videos, courses seem like a good route.
A modern services leader has at least three sets of stakeholders - 1. Client 2. Colleagues 3. Ecosystem partners . There are a lot of nuances about all of them and very few master all three even when you become a partner
My own view is that you focus on your colleagues first as a leader . Learn how to make them successful so that they can in turn make the client and ecosystem partners successful . Don’t take it too literally - just trying to give you a big picture idea
Read and listen to talks given by people who have done it well . Don’t mimic them - spend the time asking why their strategies worked . For example - my generation grew up thinking Jack Welch was the epitome of a good leader . Today he might not be the best example . You need to spend quality time thinking through the WHY questions
Read “Thinking Fast and Slow”. Then go outside and meet people. The first will make you a lot smarter. The second will get you promoted.
You aren’t going to lead as a M. Keep doing whatever the people above you want
What practice area btw? Operations, M&A, HC, etc.?

Be the leader that you wished you had. The ordeals I went through with toxic leaders enabled me to be a better version of myself to my teams. And loyalty is earned.

You don’t need to be a leader. Just be a manager, get PMP certification.
