Lmao. Not gonna lie GTs vacation policy is a legit reason not to work there
Not sure I'd call it petty, but....
My interviews were more than 30 years ago with Big 8.
The Director of Recruiting at Deloitte Haskins & Sells simultaneously offered me a job and called me stupid (yes, he used the word stupid) and questioned my value. Go figure, I still remember his name. Definitely made that one an easy choice to remove from my list.
Never interviewed with Peat Marwick (now KPMG) because there was a guy in my class who interned there and he was a douche. I guess that one is a little petty 😀
GT5, i hear your firm has similar features of being a “sweatshop”, also I hear your firm doesn’t know what they are doing. You know how I know that? Because I keep obtaining clients from GT that fire GT for being incompetent
Im assuming unlimited vacation works in Silicon Valley because it’s more creatively driven. Meaning, you don’t need to be at your desk to develop code or a app idea. Accounting, you’re not coming up with creative ideas, you’re just getting shit done. This is just my assumption though
I won't work for GT, because during my college interview the partner just read my transcript back to me. I had a rough couple first years in a different major and he told me he didn't think any big four or larger firm would hire me. Obviously an asshole but I thought it showed poor judgement letting this guy's be the face to recruits. Kinda petty but seriously fuck that guy.
Idk why everyone is so salty about GTs vacation policy. I’ve taken nearly 30 days off from work this FY and received an exceeds in my performance review this year. Sounds like y’all are doing it wrong 🤷♂️
Should have prefaced everything by adding a "in my market" label. In our case, it's flipped. The wps we get from BDO are utterly awful (e.g. our client acquired/merged with a BDO client). As in, "that partner should be fired" awful. Though... I can admittedly see the reverse in a market or business line Grant is weaker in and one where BDO is stronger in.
Baker Tilly 1, you were not interviewed because you could not properly spell “Andersen”.
GT4 this! I spent three months of FY18 sitting on the bench/FTO and slacking off and still got promoted
I won’t work for Deloitte and Touche because my husband can’t say the name without hysterically laughing.
What’s their vacation policy?
@EY2, funny you say that, EY did the same exact thing to me and others. Totally dependent on the recruiter
BDO has a sweatshop reputation and their employees have an inferiority complex to the B4. RSM is underdeveloped in my market. KPMG is the under bidder in my market and I've heard bad things about their recruiter. Interviewed and have heard bad things about PwC in my market (stiff, hierarchical, cold, highest hours). I avoid Deloitte b/c of their firm's direction (more consulting oriented). That leaves Grant and EY. :/
@Manager 1, I don’t get this mentality. We are all humans and deserve respect. Even if the candidate was disrespectful and unprofessional, why should you dip to their level as a firm view? I just don’t get it. GT iced me after office visits and still to this day am not real sure if I was just thrown away or rejected. Definitely wasn’t barred from working there because when I tested the waters after making senior, that office offered a job without an interview, I politely rejected, but I could have been petty and just never responded
I didn’t want to work for Deloitte because they seemed fratty and full of themselves.
McGladrey - interviewer (manager) kept talking about how republicans and conservatives are stupid and morally wrong. That he talked politics with his teams and harassed the ones that don’t agree with him - he seemed really happy about this. Then repeatedly asked what I was when I tried to casually sidestep the questions. He insulted and harassed me for not being an Obama supporter during the interview when I finally got tired of the avoiding the question. I debated just getting up and walking out of the interview but was concerned he’d hold a grudge and find some way to screw me like calling up the firm I accepted an offer to because he knew my future boss. I didn’t even want to be in the same building as this guy let alone possibly working with him so I turned down the office visit.
GT7: I am happy you we re able to make this work for you. I feel that some people may be able to fully enjoy this new benefit, I think that many people will struggle to be able to take time off. And, when you leave, you do not have anything accrued so you could either get some extra cash or take time off between jobs. I would be to use a benefit like that this year but I would have not last year due to the workload. I think it would be helpful for you guys to post what your experiences have been so far with the new benefit.
@EY9 it’s really just about planning your vacation a bit in advance and booking any openings that come up. Got my utilization report for the fiscal year and I’ve actually taken 6 weeks over the last 12 months. So it’s a good policy if you plan accordingly and make sure you’re utilized the rest of the time. As GT says. Captain of your own career lol
I do compensation and benefits consulting and GT’s FTO model is great, especially at rewarding those who may be surging over 100% on projects. Remember busy season? When you’re working 60-70 hours a week? This allows for time off post busy season to recoup. Now, the only ones this kinda constrains are the groups of people who are only billing 20-30 hours a week... but if your hours are that low for an extended period of time, you’re either fooling around or selling a crap ton of business...
Either work for Big 4, or go into industry.
Haha fair enough. I’m overworked so I submit my vacation requests with long paragraphs and they get approved. Nothing extra though. I take the same as anybody else.
Over 30 years ago here. I wouldn’t work for Arthur Anderson since they were the only Big 8 firm that didn’t select me for an on-campus interview. Wait, never mind...
