Lmao. Not gonna lie GTs vacation policy is a legit reason not to work there
Not sure I'd call it petty, but....
My interviews were more than 30 years ago with Big 8.
The Director of Recruiting at Deloitte Haskins & Sells simultaneously offered me a job and called me stupid (yes, he used the word stupid) and questioned my value. Go figure, I still remember his name. Definitely made that one an easy choice to remove from my list.
Never interviewed with Peat Marwick (now KPMG) because there was a guy in my class who interned there and he was a douche. I guess that one is a little petty 😀
SA2, EY2, Manager1...
Trying to figure out if you're all really discussing the same thing.
If someone is engaged in the recruiting process and has an interview, they 100% absolutely deserve the respect of feedback afterwards if the decision is not to extend an offer. Further, if there had been existing dialogue, interaction and engagement and the firm decides to pass on an in house interview, there should 100% absolutely be communication on that decision...ie, if a candidate has been engaged with the firm is some manner of depth, the candidate deserves communication.
If the candidate simply sends in a cold resume and application and there has been no other or limited engagement, then I agree it's acceptable for the firm to not proactively reply.
Not sure of the fact patterns above and not sure if you are all on same page with Manager1 or not.
Petty? I won’t work for RSM in my market because an old boss of mine left my firm to work there and I don’t ever want to see that boss’s weird teeth again if I can help it
PKF Texas - it’s not exactly a petty reason why I would never work for the firm, it’s actually a pretty legit one, I know two people who worked there that were harassed and mocked for their faith and ethnicity by clients and colleagues at work. Management didn’t do anything about the situation and told them to suck it up. It’s 2018, people shouldn’t be going around saying racial slurs at work like that and it shouldn’t be tolerated. Culture is key and their culture is trash
I feel like GT HR got wind of this thread and told people to post favorable. I was a high performer, never got push back when I took time off, and took more than was allowed under the old policy. That was my benchmark. But I saw it fail with many teams and meany people. Can it work? Yes. Does it work? For some. But in my mind, PTO isn’t supposed to be a perk that works “for some.”
I drank the Koolaid about FTO when it came out, “captain your career” etc, saw some potential for problem but also my office was pretty laid back figured it’d be fine. I feel like the revised approval process was GT saying “haha jk, we are the captain of your career.” It was no longer flexible. Again, I took time off, always rated exceeds, never refused PTO. But saw it happen to other people and it wasn’t a perk I could sell to recruits. And maybe if I just didn’t care about the approval process I’d have been happier. Taken more Friday’s off. But the point was FLEXIBLE, right? And I’m in tax, I follow the regs...
From what I saw, IN GENERAL, neither flexible nor unlimited.
@Tax Senior Manager 1 – fake news.
I concur SA1, it like the partners have that stick jammed up there good making them drink that special koolaid on demand
@EY4 Are you me? Totally forgot about that
I wouldn’t work for Cohn reznick because they turned me down for the externship in college when I got offers from other big four - ended up accepting EY and here we are
GT5 - so funny you should say that BDO wps are awful, I recently inherited one of your clients and I have no earthly idea how you ever signed off on this piece of crap with a clean opinion 🤦♀️ you might want to get yourself a ladder and come down off your high horse......
This old and ugly ass MD at EY in NY told me that I was less qualified than every person who has every interviewed with him and I was never going to get a job ...
SM2, rules for PTO in CA, where Silicon Valley is located, are different from other States, so the fact that they are (moving to) unlimited PTO means sh*t to everyone else.
GTs vacation policy seems ridiculous but I’ve managed to take more vacation the last two years under this policy than was allowed under our 22 days preciously allotted
@pwc 7 that’s EXACTLY why I never bothered to apply at PWC. One recruiter, 3.3 GPA my Sophomore Year. I ended getting stellar grades through my master’s programs but was not about to apply to PwC ever. Then all my friends who interned at the other Big 4s came back with horror stories in Audit and did other stuff (either consulting or industry) and I really wanted to do Audit so GT was the next best thing. So far so good. I never work weekends, I’ve never worked with my team past 10:30p and even that was just a one time thing in these past 3 years. The minute that switches up— if my compensation doesn’t balance that out... I may have to speak to a few folks lol.
Yeah I don’t think vacation is a petty reason!
@ EY 2 - I often tell recruiters not to reply to some candidates who have no chance at all... maybe that’s why?
@Manager 1, maybe I should clarify. I spoke to a partner on the phone for approx 5 mins. I don’t consider that an interview. I got the call almost 1 day after submitting an application and got an offer that afternoon. I asked around and apparently they lost most of the audit team they were trying to hire me for. That is why I declined the offer. Didn’t want to be on a dysfunctional team.
BDO2, sorry I didn't mean just companies located there but many tech companies and other forward-looking companies that are generally places where ppl want to work. GT is not unique with this type of benefit. Employees just need to know how to use it and exploit it like any other benefit. And, more importantly, it's not used against you in performance reviews unless you take advantage of it and don't get work done. Same way PTO was looked at. Nothing changed.
@GT2 agreed on the “flexible” part. But as you said right, took more than you previously had under PTO. Also it’s a company so staffing needs always come first. So learn to work the system. Booking FTO way ahead when unassigned for a week block only needs scheduler approval.
@GT 4 and GT 8: I am glad for you guys for being able to take more time off now than before. I completely agree that planning will almost allow you to take the deserved time off. But, I feel that when you are stuck on massing long term projects, your time off request may be more scrutinized than It would’ve had in the past. Anyway, congrats and please share the best practices with your colleagues so they can use it too. Always remember, help others and others will help you.
EY4 you are cute lol, but that’s a good reason!
