By having teams work full time on the effort and underreport their hours, keeping the client spend lower so they can accommodate the delays. Basically, you fund your partners relationship management and lack of accountability. It was how I ended up working 80+ hour weeks with only 85% utilization. If I slowed down on RFPs and proposals or other PD efforts, I’d hear that I was slipping. Finally realized I wouldn’t work 2 40 hour jobs at half my salary each and exited. Being salaried workers in consulting is the biggest scam in the labor market. And the people who say you just need better boundaries don’t have the same partners. There are many practices where boundaries are a one way ticket to the fire exit.
Make an exit to industry. If you can’t beat them, join them.
