Whatever you do, if you can-decide before
s/he moves in. Have that hard conversation beforehand
My partner would transfer me a “contribution” every month, for reference out of monthly bills of $4000 she would transfer me about $500 but she would also pay 90% of the groceries every months (which is probably another $700-800).
If the plan is to get married, I would want her to save and invest. If it’s just a short term arrangement, they would either help me pay the mortgage through rent or they’d pay a higher proportion of other bills.
Yeah since marriage isn’t in the immediate future, mixing finances would be tough. Since it’s only been about a year of dating, I realized your partner helping with the mortgage would create a weird scenario where they could feel ownership of some of the equity. Just in case I run into this scenario, I did some research and apparently one path is for you to focus on the principal payments and she can handle half the interest, HOA fees, taxes, etc. with the expectations written/signed as a private agreement. Leases on the other hand can apparently create a lot of legal head aches during a break up since she’ll have tenant rights. In any case, good luck to you.

Discuss before you move in and write up a ‘lease’ or similar agreement. State how much the new person pays the house owner, the length of the lease (minimum months), how much notice to move out, etc
What would be a fair split of “rent” in this situation?
Why would they pay anything..?
