Never tell your boss that you're only there for the money. As long as you are there, the pay is fine and you're thankful for the 2%. No one likes blackmail or threats. You have to weigh the pros and cons of your job. The salary is only part of the reason you would stay. Your lifestyle expenses are not your employer's responsibility. Manage your personal finances better. You agreed to work at a certain salary when you were first hired and you should regard your 2% increases as a tip. If you want more than that, you need to make yourself more valuable and get an actual promotion. If you've made yourself more valuable and they don't give you an acceptable raise, you now have more skills you can bring to a new employer. When you find a better position, don't accept a counter offer from your current employer. It will only be a temporary fix for them until they can find your replacement, who actually wants to work there. Wherever you work, give it your all and be grateful and happy to be there.
My cost of living is something that is dependent on whether or not I can survive at my current position. I was not suggesting blackmailing my boss either. I have been asking for 2 years for more responsibilities and duties. My company just keeps acquiring other companies that bring in other people to cover those, so there's nowhere for me to go anywhere. My husband and I are very good at managing money, we do not spend excessively on "lifestyle expenses" as you put it, so that it not the problem. Do not tell me to manage my money better because you think that a 2% pay increase is a tip??? A pay increase is an adjustment to people's salary and should be made according to the changes in the cost of living. I agreed to the pay when I first started the role over 4 years ago. But it is a company's responsibility to give their employees a respectable and reasonable salary so they can live a reasonable life outside. I'm glad you are someone who gets their more than 10% increase every year and probably enjoys being the person who gives out the 2% raises to your lower employees ensuring your high pay increase. But don't ever try and justify that a pay raise is a "tip." Disrespectful and ignorant.
