Do you like the work? If so, what about the MD route? I work with MDs who work less than partners, some are even on FWAs, and are just because they enjoy the work but not the selling
Comp and hours really depend. Like I said, some are on flex work arrangements and work 35 hours a week. Others work just as much as partners. The average is probably a little less than a partner but still more than a standard SM
Curious - what exit opportunities are you seeing?
I’d leave now depending on what you want. If WLB is 100% what you want, prob could leave for a manager/assistant controller route. Only reason to stay longer would be for a director/ish type technical accounting role, or potentially controller. But both of those imo have sameish WLB to CMAAS imo
Additionally it seems like it’s more SAs/As but potentially there will be more layoffs, so find a cushy job now before it becomes a potentially saturated market
I waited until SM before leaving but now that I’m out I wish I’d left as a new manager. If you leave now and don’t love the role you land or find you need more experience for your desired exit opp you can always boomerang back.
I don’t think one is better than the other, but in my experience the opportunities were different. As a SM I was much more specialized (which was fine for me but if I had wanted a broader role or something outside my direct experience it would have been much much more difficult to land as a SM). SM/Director opportunities are also harder to come by in my experience - you’re either under qualified for C Suite (looking for 15+ years of experience) or too experienced to come in at a lower level. Tax director spots are also just harder to find I think since companies tend to have fewer of them, so it was more about timing and if there were openings when I was looking.
Exit now if you don't want to stay in PA. Manager is a sweet spot to jump.
