I went a portfolio review and was offered a position on the spot- i really got lucky. If you’re in a major city (in in NYC) there are portfolio reviews and networking events almost every week!
The One Club for Creativity has great networking events and portfolio reviews! I also suggest joining NYC Ad Jobs & Networking on Facebook. The network there is extensive and gives you the opportunity to post your book and see job postings
I sent out a dimensional piece to 9 agencies. Tailored it to each one. It was a non-starter for some, a conversation starter for others and, eventually I landed a job. If you’re going to do something make it relevant to each person you’re sending it to. Sweat the details. And give them a reason to have a conversation with you. But first make your portfolio as good as it can be. Good luck.
Oh woah! Could you give an example of a dimensional piece you sent out?
You will hate hearing this, but honestly, keep working on your book. Get it to the point where you have no weak pieces. Make it so good that CDs will look at it and think “man, I’d like to have her working on this brief I have."
The good news is you’re already at an agency, so as you work in the studio, if you get friendly with some of the creatives, ask if they’d be willing to take a look at your book and give you their thoughts. If they like your book, ask if they would pass it onto the in house recruiter.
@Creative Director 1 haha yup, I feel like my book is just going to be a constant work in progress. Just curious, do you think that reaching out directly to CDs on LinkedIn would be more effective than cold messaging recruiters at times since recruiters are getting messages from individuals from all sorts of departments?
Oh that’s awesome! And I am in NYC :) May I ask what site you recommend to search for these portfolio review/networking events?
No, unfortunately. But there was a someone who bought paid search ads on Google. They appeared on the right side of the results every time one of the selected ECDs or CDs Googled themselves. It was genius and he or she (can’t remember which) got a job in short order. Ask yourself: If could meet with a CD or ECD what would you tell them (or show them) that would make them immediately interested in knowing more about you? Hope this helps.
