I scheduled my days, and would set a chunk of time for networking (like scheduling coffees, etc), resume building/sending. I allotted 4-5 hours a day for this, about 2 days a week. This industry is pretty tight, so you don't want to annoy people...and then would use the rest of the time to get personal stuff done. Make sure you file for unemployment, you pay into it when your employees so it's your right!
Make sure you take breaks. Treat job hunting like your full-time job. Do it from 10-6 with a lunch and a coffee break. No one works weekends so you shouldn't either.
Apply for unemployment. Figure out your health insurance. Look for freelance and fulltime. Hit up everyone you know. Message recruiters on LinkedIn. Reach out to CDs. Join WNW, Facebook groups, and slack channels. Don't tell people you were laid off unless they specifically ask.
I find it helpful to make to do lists for each day. Once I've done those things, it's up to me if I want to continue to work the rest of the day or take a break and go to a museum.
When I was laid off I decided to be open to freelance. I loved freelancing so much, I did it for 5 years!
What they said^
I was laid off for 7 months, freelanced as much as I could during that time. It was rough but I worked really hard to improve myself and job hunt, but also make time for family and fun! Now that I’m out of it, it was the most productive experience of my short career! Keep your chin up
Thanks everyone 🙏🏾🖤
Anyone have any advice on what to tell people (old network contacts) when I'm reaching out? How do I explain why I'm suddenly emailing/available to work?
You should say exactly the same thing anyone looking for a new opportunity would, OP! Just explain that you’re looking for a new opportunity, and if you find a specific position make sure to mention why X company is appealing and a good fit for your background. I don’t think it’s the worst to give the layoff insight to a contact you’re very close with, but I agree that it’s best to keep to yourself unless specifically asked. Good luck!
Try to go work (job search) in a coffee shop and not at home as much as possible. Set up coffee dates with mentors, colleagues who might be able to connect you. Getting out of my house and getting up and dressed like I was going to work was huge for my mental health. Good luck!!!
Good luck OP, I’m pretty sure I’ll be right there with you in no time at all.
