I would take the remote MCOL with $300k+. Life is on auto pilot. Focus on your family, relationships, hobbies, and retire early. Have everything you ever need.
Unless you’re the type to want the mansion in the Hamptons, then obvi you’ll need to make moves. But, think about what you want. Not what people tell you to want.
Yes that’s the counter point retire early live mcol life. There are things you can only get if you make it in hcol I feel bad leaving opportunity on the table.
Thank you for sharing your question with this community. Honestly you are in your 20's NOW is the time in your life to make calculated risks. You could be like me and work for an organization for 22yrs and get let go. If you have an opportunity like this, TAKE IT! If it flops or you try it and you don't like it, you are still young enough to start over #NOREGERTS
God Bless!!
Not really, new management (very much American) came in and decided I didn't know how to do my job after 22yrs. So there is that,..
Yall hiring ? 👀
Do the A16Z backed startup
Life is short, spend it doing cool shit
You can get another job just like the one you have if this doesn't work out

Asia is a continent. Singapore is very different from India. And risk appetite for either with be different. I would rather fail in Singapore than India
Most startups end up worth 0 as opposed to billions. So it depends on what is the current funding situation and which country /market they are operating in. Everyone is aware of A16Z investments that turned profitable, they have far longer list of ventures that didn’t
Are you being offered a ceo position, because I’m not sure what “run a company” implies here. What exactly is the role? And what exactly is the comp? You listed your google comp which is entirely irrelevant unless you provide the alternative.
You have not provided any details
Founder role this happened because of my previous experience.
Salary I can pay myself well enough to save lower % than at G but get much more mileage out of existing savings as country I’m moving to is cheaper than US - not Singapore.
Founder level equity terms are similar I think to other seed rounds of a16.
Yeah dude I’m struggling to even find an entry level job lol, don’t think you could go wrong either way tho. Making life changing money
Being tapped to run an A16z ompany while a Google L5 (?) is wild
Take the opportunity. I regret not taking more chances and opportunities when I was approached at your age. I could be retired by now. You are young enough to be able to pivot and recover if things don't work out.
DCF modelling factoring in probability
If you're still relatively young without a family or kids type of responsibility I think it makes sense from a YOLO perspective to try the startup. With that resume and story, if the startup fails, you will be able to find another decent job later if needed. Make sure to maintain good rapport with your Google colleagues on the way out in case you need to re-connect with them later.
If you do have a family and you're more focused on home building and that part of your life, leave it to someone else. Only you will know the answer to this question
Yup SWE
It depends on you. You work at Google and youo're not making 500k? That's a big surprise.
Remote cuts tc
Asia! Sounds way more fun
Lead startup (priceless exp)
First go touch some grass bro. You have 500k+ in the bank in your 20’s.
And if I were you i’d take the startup. Especially if the product seems solid. You can always come back to the states and get another job at google(given you have and maintain a good relationship with management.
If 500k savings is not crazy you're on a different planet
Ask yourself these questions
What do I value? A slower pace of life or being in the middle of things?
If I do/don’t take this opportunity, will I regret it in 5 years?
Do you have any family to consider? If yes, will my family be happy and successful in the new environment?
Don’t just consider money here…being a founder is an awesome opportunity but your life balance will change. Be sure that you are taking care of yourself mentally, physically and emotionally if you take on this exciting challenge
Put money aside for a moment. Do you want the challenge to see if you can be successful at a startup and overseas? That should be the determining factor. Money will always be there for you.
Apply the regret minimization framework here. Which path will minimize regrets when you look back in 10 years. That being said, be a little wary of what a16z promises you.
Unless they are forcing you to attend Diddy parties, I'd take the risk. You're young and will be able to assimilate back to drone life easily.
"Force".. Thought those parties were a perk
Watch out for double taxation. The US does not have tax
treaties with some Asian countries, which could result in
significantly higher taxes if one's income exceeds the
standard $120k foreign income exclusion, depending on
the payroll jurisdiction.
Consult a tax accountant or a tax attorney familiar with
foreign employment/taxation and ask him/her/it/them
to calculate several hypothetical tax returns to find out
the impact on your US tax return.
Several years ago I was offered a director level job in
Singapore at a base salary of 30k SGD per month, or
360k SGD annually, which equated to approximately
270k USD at the time. I calculated a hypothetical tax
return and found out the aggregate margina tax rate
would have been 67%, and the effective tax rate would
have been 52% even after claiming all the available tax
credits and exemptions for that situation. I also figured
out my prospective employer would have had to pay me
$480k SGD (gross up) in order to equalize my net income
after all taxes with what I would keep if the entire $360k
were paid on a US payroll.
Watch out for taxes and for other benefits or withholdings
such as health insurance or programs equivalent to social
security in the US, such as Singapore.CPF.
Good Luck!
Alternatively, if OP is really ballsy, they could buy a Caribbean citizenship for ~$100k and toss the US one. Then they won't ever be double taxed again.
Do It, if you believe there will be a high return and if you are not content with your current savings then it will be worth it for you.
