I wouldn't because I personally dislike the overall outdoorsy smell you have when ypu walk outside.. not body odor, just that smell that sticks to your clothes. I like getting to work as put together and lovely smelling as possible.
GT1 I assume you're not from a humid climate. If you were, you'd totally understand this!
Deloitte actually gives us a hybrid commuter subsidy. It started post-pandemic and so far, it has been $1000 every 6 months to use for Ubers, parking, and public transportation to work office or work events. Hopefully it becomes a standard benefit and then all the firms might follow suit. One can only dream...
Why wouldnt you walk to work?
Late night return home is the only thing that would compel a supervisor to pay for an Uber - and only if you can’t return to home at rush hour & finish your extended work-day remotely. You need to ask this of whomever approves your expense reports, ask other female colleagues what their experience is. Office policies vary, depending on location. I’m a guy and live in the Chicago suburbs, so 15 minute walk to train and 20 minutes from train station to work is expected. You wear what the weather demands, with emphasis on function over fashion. And yes, women commute in that manner too. Land’s End and LL Bean outerwear isn’t haute couture, but since everyone dresses that way in the winter, it’s just acknowledged that it’s better to be warm than to be miserable.
i always walk to the office since it’s only 20 minutes door to door on foot. used to at least walk home most of the time even when i lived more like 40 minutes walk away.
and no, i don’t think any firm will reimburse your standard commute to/from the office. but some have policies for covering transportation home if you work a certain amount of overtime hours in a day
EY currently reimburses for standard commute
I mean no one can answer if you “should” walk to work for you lol. Do you want to walk to work? I always did when I lived close because I sit at a desk all day and needed the exercise. Reimbursement policies are going to be firm specific, but pwc will reimburse if it’s late (after 9pm usually) or bad weather and potentially unsafe
I mean I guess I still don’t really understand the question. It’s walking. Do you like walking? Is this a safety concern? It’s kind of hard to provide input there without knowing what city you’re in

How many times a year does it get “super dark”?
How you get to and from work is your choice. As such, your safety outside the office is solely your responsibility. It’s nice and generous if a firm wants to help with Ubers and that sort of thing, but it’s not the norm and should not be the expectation. If you won’t feel safe, please take care of yourself and drive/Uber.
I live 25 minutes from the office and walk to work every day! I love breathing in fresh air and having a short commute. Would highly recommend (obviously depends on safety of the area though)
Too cold for that now.
I walk to one of my clients often and if i feel unsafe walking back i just expense an uber. they don't usually turn down expenses if you put "felt unsafe walking home" or something in the description

Yeah I think walking or biking is ideal. You could even get a scooter. Then you don't have to pay for a car, gas, insurance, or parking
If you work overtime, or super late, the firm generally will pay for transport home, but they aren’t going to pay because you don’t like the weather during your chosen mode of commute.
My firm would pay for a taxi if we were working late, which is documented in the employee handbook. Does your firm have something similar? It would also involve a discussion with the manager.
I walked to and from work whenever I could. Made me feel great and it was a mental transition. But if you feel uncomfortable for any reason, then find an alternative.
No
I would if my team comes in. Communication and coordination in office vs online is easier and organic in my opinion
I’ve been walking as my commute for the past three years and enjoy it, even in the cold, rain, etc. When I start home late, I text a family member to let them know (that way if too much time passes, hopefully this never happens, they’ll at least know). I bring shoes to change into/keep a pair at the office/client site so this isn’t an issue and I also keep items to freshen up with, if needed.
I have on occasion accepted a ride home (when it’s been really really late) from a team member going my general direction.
My walk is about 20 mins to the office and I always walk. Work does reimburse for Ubers or public transit though
