Of course, discussions are good. Otherwise you'll have more biased pay situations and discussions will help avoid this. Although, some employees may come to find out they are underpaid due to their poor performance or just others performing extremely well. Transparency is key
Not discussing salary only helps management. The more information you have the better when you negotiate, so it’s best to share salary info with your peers. Corporations and partners profit off people thinking they shouldn’t discuss salaries!!
It’s absolutely necessary.

This depends on what area of the country. Midwesterners never want to talk about salary, and Californians always want to share. So not merely generational, but also geographic/cultural.
I’ve talked with friends at work and other firms. Absolutely would continue to share - I’m certain I make more for it because I knew how much I was underpaid.
Salary should be universal in terms of people knowing them. Specially for minorities and women the pay gap is huge!
Everyone wants to know other peoples salaries but never want to discuss their own
I know one coworker who discusses salaries. It was because of them that I found out that they asked for a raise (under a year) despite not getting a title change. I followed their example and got the same raise. Is it messed up 5 other colleagues with more experience than me with the same title all still make the base salary for the position ? Yes, but this would be resolved if there was salary transparency and negotiation for all levels.
It is only temporary when you and your colleagues promote their raise will be larger and you will both be at same rate.
I’ve discussed salary with coworkers, friends, family, and strangers on the internet. I don’t have anything to hide. If management sees that as a problem then I think it’s more of a reflection on the firm. It helps with negotiations for salary and if the firm knows many people are upset with their pay, rather than everyone leaving, they may be able to improve it.
Not taboo at all. My salary is $85,000.
Personally, I'm glad for FB. Now I know how I've been lowballed. An informed constituent is better equipped to negotiate and look out for one's best interest. Thanks to all the FB persons who shared their information. I'm equipped for the future.
I feel like the GenZs have spreadsheets where they track their salaries. So everyone know what everyone else makes. It’s been the experience of that I. My office.

Sounds about right, making anything under $150k isn’t anything to brag about and we live in such a transparent world that people can figure out salaries from Glassdoor or fishbowl so why not share. Also, it helps in negotiations. What is the benefit of not sharing salaries from the employees viewpoint? Hurt feelings?
Personally, I'm happy to share and appreciate others that do as well. But also understand that many people consider it to be private information. To each their own.
Make a shared spreadsheet for your peers (same BU, same practice, same program if applicable) then anon put your salaries in
If your group ID’d above is smaller enough you can include performance and personnel information too like performance evaluation scoring, side projects/extracurricular stuff, client type etc
Yeah idgaf. I make bands and I ain’t afraid to let these fools know what’s good
IMO only those that are insecure about what they make seek to know what their peers make. Instead of worrying about what your peers make ask yourself if you are content with your salary, you like your work, you like your peers, bosses. If those are mostly yes then what difference does anything else matter? Stop worry about everyone else, when no one else worries about you?
Internal auditor 1 - haha stole the words right out of my mouth. This guy is here telling people that wanting to know how much your colleagues make reflects insecurity while knowing he’s the second highest paid in his BU…
I discuss my salary with my peers, and I'm open with anyone that asks. I've got the highest utilization in my cohort, so I want to make sure I'm paid for it. If I make less than the person who is slacking their way through the job, I'm gonna have an issue.
Why not discuss it? There is a small range at most firms for any single level. I don’t think you need to disclose your salary to the dollar but ranges are ok. Wouldn’t you want to know what’s in store over the next few years?
Not sure if anyone said this already because I didn’t read the replies but if someone straight up asks me it’s too awkward. Only ask your work friends friends that q
So how much do you all make anyway?
About $3.50.
I think it currently is taboo to discuss, but that culture of it being taboo is more or less a mechanism to keep women and minorities salaries lower without them knowing. So I try my best to always be as upfront as possible with my own salary to do my small part in changing this discourse!
Yes! Recently before interviewing for a promotional position, I reached out to colleagues who had been in my shoes for salary and negotiation tips. By not asking, you cheat yourself.
