H1-B's need to be reformed, but it is not going to be the accounting profession it affects the most as accounting was not a serial abuser like IT/IT Consulting. The biggest impact is too the Indian firms such as Cognizant and Tata Consulting Services.
The whole thing is frustrating because it’s becoming into a foreigners vs Americans debate when it’s actually a capitalism vs Americans issue. Business owners will always cut costs, and tbh many uneducated maga voters Trump because he’s a “good business man” so I guess they’re getting what they voted for.
The topic is getting too ugly and should not be an excuse to be racist/hateful, which is what it’s turned into. Foreign workers are working for fraction of the salaries, which is very exploitative. But I will say it is hilarious to see the Republican Party implode and it’s not even Jan.
Holy crap, this response is insane. I am not told anything, I am literally seeing it unfold in real time from the horse’s mouth. I am reading what Elon, Vivek, Loomer, etc are saying from their own accounts. I am not parroting anything…I am simply looking at the discourse that is happening within the R party.
And I don’t deny that most immigrants are great people, and I certainly don’t think they are “eating pets” (😉) nor do I think majority of immigrants are “bringing crime, drugs, problems, rapists” (😉).
The Democrat party also does not provide mass free housing/food/etc for illegal immigrants. They beleive in reducing unnecessary barriers and visa caps for illegal immigrants, especially those who are essential workers. While the Republicans focus on deportations and border control, the democrats are focused on streamlining the arduous process of becoming legal status. And obviously, the democrats still do deportations—the Obama administration actually had high numbers of deportations.
I also hope you know that illegal immigrants pay taxes— they actually paid $96 billion in taxes in 2022. Even though they aren’t eligible for Medicaid. Not to mention that illegal immigrants are an essential part of our labor force—they are doing jobs that Americans are refusing to do. They are literally the “peaceful, good people who work hard and pay taxes” that you claim you like.
Anyways, coming back to the H1B…all I’ll say is that the Republican Party’s whole platform is “America First” but their spokesmen are saying “Americans are too stupid so we have to get Indian workers” but also at the same time they want to defund the DoE and also encourage people to be skeptical of scientists and economists by claiming “fake news”. The administration clearly has a personal interest in keeping Americans uneducated…so I think YOU need to wake up.
In the words of Danielle Staub, pay attention puh-lease.
Chief
This is such a manufactured crisis. Trump can save the day now by saying we will just leave everything as it is with h1b
Agreed this sounds stupid. H1Bs are filling roles that weren’t being filled. Yet we are upset about it? The accounting profession is a gold star case that when a profession is in demand, the companies look offshore first before incentivizing onshore as keeping cost down is the priority vs providing US jobs
Ah but you just highlighted the issue
The purpose of H1B Visas is inherently anti American.
It is pro American business.
So you are pitting what’s best for a country’s people against what’s best for a country’s elites.
Let’s be honest here:
It’s not that the businesses can find qualified people, it’s that they can find their Unicorn at the price they want to pay.
The generational betrayal of the boomers failing to give their own children and grandchildren better lives, and instead giving those better lives to hostile aliens from other continents is too unrealistically wicked to even appear in a fiction story as a wild plot device.
All H-1Bs should not be renewed, and the recipients should be sent back upon expiration. No exceptions.
From "The Register" https://www.theregister.com/2024/09/18/ibm_job_cuts/
IBM has been laying off a substantial number of employees this week and is trying to keep it quiet, our sources have said.
One IBM employee told The Register that IBM Cloud experienced "a massive layoff" in the past few days that affected thousands of people.
"Unlike traditional layoffs, this one was done in secret," the insider said. "My manager told me that they were required to sign an NDA not to talk about the specifics."
I had a foreigner who was hired ABOVE me who could barely speak English, refused to ask management questions, and did not know what year-to-date financials were (!!!). We do not need more of these people bringing down wages and overall workplace quality. Look at how miserable Accountants in Canada are after they let in waaaaaay too many Indians
as a foreign accountant I agree. There are abuse but there are also talented guys. Bad actors need to be removed and it must be used to hire talent not replace domestic workers
Not an H1B but median H1B pay is 100k plus, its definately not a cheap labor. One has to get Dep of Labor approval to sponsor someone for h1b that includes proving it does not replace american workers and undercut american wage.
You literally can’t accept cheap wages as an H1-b holder. Like A1 said, the DOL approves the salary relative to American workers in the same role - this is literally to prevent paying foreign workers less. The average salary is also over 100k - H1-B visas are for skilled labor…often with a masters degree. H1-Bs aren’t a cheap solution to a company, and there just aren’t that many open spots each year (right now) for it to move the needle economically.
America first. Fix the education system so we need to import less foreigners.
Yea unfortunately Accountant 1 is right, they don't want to do that either. They want to keep people out of America and at the same time don't want to fix our education system. It really is pitiful.
"Calling 'Indian third world invaders replacing american workers' is definately not coming from Economic point of view"
Yes, that's because not every outcome that matters is not necessarily economic. We are not all urban bugmen, homo-eoconomicus, interchangable units.
you have 15 million illegals entered and people attacking 65000 visas a year because they can be tracked and are like soft targets.
Millions of tech jobs produced every year, 65000 visas have almost neglibile effect. Focus on bigger part
"you have 15 million illegals entered and people attacking 65000 visas a year because they can be tracked and are like soft targets."
---We can do both, and we should do both.
"Millions of tech jobs produced every year, 65000 visas have almost neglibile effect. Focus on bigger part"
---Completely untrue, and also ignores the cumulative effect, when there are hundreds of thousands in the country at any given moment. The "cap" is 85k PER YEAR, except when there are circumstances where there is no cap, which happens often.
uncapped are for Not for proft organization like in Universities, etc.
