Any Spotify people here? Noticed there’s an AM role going at the moment in the UK but not sure what experience level it is. For reference I’ve got 6 years in ad sales experience with 3 years management (both in music industry). Would this be comfortable or is it worth holding out for AD?

Nope, because agencies still have systemic barriers in place. Internships, degree requirements, and untrained recruiters all create significant barriers to entry. There has to be a coordinated effort to remove the barriers in order for diversity initiatives to even have a chance to work.

Untrained creative recruiters is the biggest problem in the industry across a lot of issues

It’s for the masthead and PR.
Not for lack of trying. The D&I leads at my holdco are incredibly hard working. A big issue can be a low number of diverse candidates applying for the more senior jobs and the wrong pipelines in place for entry level positions. We have to make the advertising industry more appealing to diverse candidates while recognizing POC who are the industry’s rising stars early in their careers. Many POC leave the industry at the mid-levels when they don’t see someone like themselves at the senior levels and we need to create an environment where POC can grow, succeed and move up the career ladder. We need to create pipelines for new hire recruitment from all black colleges as a priority, and even consider hiring straight from high school for entry level positions for those that cannot afford to go to college (I mean, what can’t we teach while we pay for an employee’s bachelor degree in tandem!), and enable those who don’t have mommy and daddy’s financial support to live in NYC on entry level salaries, etc. It’s doable, but it requires change and buy-in at the highest levels. We can do this!

All this is true. I guess the only place I see things differently is that the diversity and inclusion officer where I work is not much more than a cheerleader but they roll out for all agency meetings to tell us how great things are
D&I leaders are given impossible tasks when the CEOs/CFOs/etc they report into are old school and are only focused on diversity to make the clients happy. The topmost leaders at an organization have to be diversity champions for there to be sustained, lasting progress.
I have to say inclusion at any company is not just D&Is persons job. It’s a collaborative effort.
The ownership should really be on the company leadership. At the end of the day they are the ones responsible for recruiting, hiring, nurturing, mentoring, and promoting people of of color.
All the unconscious bias trainings in the world is not going to help, if the leadership is not also putting in the same effort.
