Does higher vault ranking (v10-30 compared to v80-100) open more doors for corporate in-house opportunities as a senior associate? If the chambers practice area rankings and expected billable hours are similar and they offer the same DPW pay scale, does it matter less? Is it better to stay at/lateral to a firm where you might be able last longer to learn the necessary skills? Any personal anecdote or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Billable hours- anyone know of or work at a big law firm where 1800 hours is acceptable?

It seems partners are much more flexible with associates who have kids than with those who don’t. If it’s okay for my colleague with a kid to leave at 5 pm and log on later, why isn’t that the same for me (no kids)? My obligations might be different, but I still have a life and want to be able to do certain things, like catch that evening workout class or cook dinner for my partner. As you can probably tell, my firm is operating 100% in person. There is no point here — I’m just whining.

Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

How does your law firm handle jury duty for associates? I’m a civil litigator and got called to serve on one week murder trial back in January. I tired to get out of it for various personal reasons but I was still stuck on the jury) Lost 40+ hrs of billable hours that week, and now in December I’ll probably finish the year 60 ish hours short of my 2000 hr target!
