Does higher vault ranking (v10-30 compared to v80-100) open more doors for corporate in-house opportunities as a senior associate? If the chambers practice area rankings and expected billable hours are similar and they offer the same DPW pay scale, does it matter less? Is it better to stay at/lateral to a firm where you might be able last longer to learn the necessary skills? Any personal anecdote or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
Billable hours- anyone know of or work at a big law firm where 1800 hours is acceptable?
It seems partners are much more flexible with associates who have kids than with those who don’t. If it’s okay for my colleague with a kid to leave at 5 pm and log on later, why isn’t that the same for me (no kids)? My obligations might be different, but I still have a life and want to be able to do certain things, like catch that evening workout class or cook dinner for my partner. As you can probably tell, my firm is operating 100% in person. There is no point here — I’m just whining.
A recruiter asked me what my billable hours were to negotiate salary for an industry position. Weird right?
Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.
I need an assistant/paralegal. Probably part time at first. I live/work in a small city in Oklahoma, solo practice. I would like approx 10 billable hours/week (if part time) from them. What do i look for in one? Pay amount? (Most here make around $12/hour). Incentives for bonus money?
What is the average annual salary increase for a first year associate starting at $125k at a busy midsized firm in New York? What would be reasonable to ask for (assuming a $300 billable rate and 1800 billable requirement)?
For those of you who worked FT and studied for another bar exam at the same time, please send some advice and tips on how you balanced everything. Starting to feel the pressure (bar prep course starts Monday) and I still have four more billable hours to go tonight. :( Thanks!!
First year here at midsize. What to do if I ask for work but none is given. the past few days I’ve had 1-3 billable hours too. Apparently it’s slow for some ppl. There was also some lay offs as well.. Wonder if I should also start looking at jobs now just in case.
How does your law firm handle jury duty for associates? I’m a civil litigator and got called to serve on one week murder trial back in January. I tired to get out of it for various personal reasons but I was still stuck on the jury) Lost 40+ hrs of billable hours that week, and now in December I’ll probably finish the year 60 ish hours short of my 2000 hr target!
How many client billable hours (excluding probono etc) are you supposed to be billing per month not to be fired? I range anywhere from 130 to 200 hours depending on the month.
Any insight into Davis Wright Tremaine’s Seattle office? Looking to lateral from the east coast and wondering what the inside scoop was? Billable requirements, is it a sweatshop, etc.?
Anyone know if Reed Smith has a balanced hours option (i.e., reduced pay with reduced billable requirements)?
Tax work at my law firm is not enough to keep me busy. Maybe I could start doing work in another department to supplement my billable hours. Is anyone here a part timer in another group? I’m thinking investment funds or start ups? Anyone else do this and any advice?
What are some rules of thumb for planning project lengths and total costs (expected billable hours)?

Maybe we should implement something like automatic posts refresh? I got a notification about "someone like mypost" but it isn't displaying at the post title...

I wanted to share this image. There were people on this bowl getting mad about diversity and inclusion at firms. This guy succeeded, but how many black folks did such policies disadvantage? How many black people got discouraged from even going to the library. Giving black people preference now is just common sense. You can't have equal merit when you have disadvantaged a group of people for many many years.
Anyone buying Bancor in the AM? Thoughts?
Non experienced hires: 1) what did you think you would be doing when you came into consulting? 2) what are you actually doing?
Worst thing you have said or heard said while on conference call and accidentally not on mute?
My CC mentioned he would recommend me for Distinct Achievement, has anyone ever gotten this? If so any feedback good or bad. I didn’t make a big deal I’m just doing my job but would be nice.
I have an interview with a McKinsey recruiter tomorrow. It’s for a BA position but it seems like it will be pretty open ended. Does anyone have any tips? I’m currently a consultant but would be willing to move down if i can get mbb on my resume. How do I make a good impression so I get a second interview and eventually an offer?
Is Ethan Allen good furniture?
Asking for a friend looking for a role in Change Management. She has several offers from big 4 firms but recently received interview invites for Huron and had some questions below: 1) How big is the Change Management practice at Huron? 2) Is the practice consistently growing yoy? 3) What does the promotion/career path look like for this practice? 4) Is there anything she should know about the practice? 5) How’s the culture in the practice? Thank you for the help! Huron
