Not callous. Just sounds super ignorant. Why do teachers teach when they get paid so terribly? Like cmon.
Teachers get paid handsomely. And they work half the year. They’re not hero’s, they’re lazy.

We're all coming at this from different angles. It's not CVS Health's fault but I gather they're in the vast majority of people who think advertising is 100% graphic design and in-app copy. That art direction equals graphic design, and that copywriting equals words on websites.
CVS Health, the creative advertising industry is having a bad time but it encapsulates far more than you seem to grasp.
Rising Star
Because that’s what they are trained to do. Coding is like refrigerator repair, a different discipline that involves significant training. People want jobs now, not in a year.
??? What kind of circular reasoning is this? You can do things other than what you’re trained for; your life is longer than a year. I think future-proofing proactively is worth it.
Two reasons
1) When it’s good, it’s amazing & a very freeing career choice
2) Swapping careers takes a lot of effort and typically money + time
Also, learning to code will not magically get you a better paying job in a more stable industry
Becoming a CD is the pinnacle, besides starting your own agency. The biggest notch on the belt.
It's your creative solution to the question being asked by the owner, exec, or client.
I know it eventually becomes a team effort.
The AD is Tom Brady, and you are the coach.
The one that makes the ultimate decision, idea, or strategy that wins or loses the game.

If you think coding has longevity you haven’t been paying attention. Simple code writing is already being handed off to AI and it’s only going to grow as AI capabilities get better.

You can say the exact same thing about advertising creatives.
"Learn to code," as if junior-level coding jobs aren't extremely competitive right now, with falling salaries. lol.
Computer science is by far the most subscribed college major in America at the moment (and has been for a number of years now); this wildly narrow focus definitely won't come back to bite you in the a$$
A lot of jobs are tough to get hired and easy to get fired from. Doesn't mean it's not worth doing or that developing software would be better
Maybe!
As someone else mentioned, this is what people are trained to do and they want a job now.
Some people do pivot out, but not everyone can or can do it that quickly, but still need to pay bills until new career kicks off.
Good point, but hasn’t it been tough for like a decade?
The gall to come and try to lecture creatives on career choices. We. Don’t. Care. About. You.
Bruh. I wasn’t trying to be adversarial. It’s a question not an indictment.

Yeah there definitely wasn’t a recent tech bubble burst with a massive industry wide layoff of people who learned to code
What do you do at CVS?
Not being funny but, do you know anyone who can shorten the length of the receipts?
Code? I’m learning to play football so I can be a quarterback
People who pursue creative jobs tend to get a lot of personal fulfillment in return. Look at the high percentage of struggling actors, musicians, writers, and artists. There is a degree of “what else would I do if not this” in all creative fields. And yes, the job security is terrible, but there are still a lot of people who are able to make a living doing something that is sometimes a lot of fun. People who don’t have a lot of creative passion might have a difficult time understanding this mindset, but for many creative people it’s akin to explaining why they chose to fall in love with a particular individual. To an extent, it’s not really a choice. Not entirely at least.
You really solved it. Dev jobs aren’t farmed out to India at all.
I was lucky enough to be in the field of graphic for 30 years but now I can't find a job for the life of me despite two degrees and tons of experience in a variety of roles. Ageism is a killer in this field and is only going to get worse with AI and other technology. I've told all my kids, don't go into the field of graphic design or really the arts in general - the pay often isn't good, experience isn't valued and technology like AI and programs like Canva are killing the field of graphic design for people professionaly trained.
Yes! Ageism sucks. And I'm thinking that your degrees and experience equal higher salary requirements for a client shopping around. But...you deserve that salary. You've put in the time, learned so many things over your tenure, know how to avoid issues, etc. Still...STILL to this day the general public looks to creatives as people who draw with crayons, and play all day. Ummm. Nope. It's not all just fun in games, lots of pre-planning, at least how I do it. Anywho, I've rambled on long enough
Choosing to be a creative in advertising makes no logical sense. But people do it because they find it exciting or fulfilling. Seeking a career as a musician or a poet isn’t rational either. If we were rational, we would have been engineers. Or… coders.
Learn to code says the person who works at CVS Health? Why not, learn to read a thermometer or learn to embalm bodies. Not everyone can or wants to code.
Nothing else sounds fun to us. Coding definitely doesn’t.
Because that’s what we do. Learn to code? have you noticed how many tens of thousands of coders have lost their jobs? How about learn to concept?
So what do you want us to do? Be jobless lol why would we learn to code as if people aren’t getting laid off in that area too. Please be serious. Branding is still important

I’m not a coder. I can type in a word doc, that’s about the extent of my computer savviness.
This is what most of us went to school for, and we’re good at it. It’s still the best path forward to making money, so we trudge on.
Can’t wait!! Love when people win.
