They lost business. Happens to everyone.
If a recruiter in advertising needs you to explain why you were laid off from an agency, it's time to get a new recruiter.
What if you straight up get fired? Asking for a friend.
"Contract ended".
"Laid off" implies you lost your job through no fault of your own. I don't see the need to spin that to anyone. Just say the contract ended or they lost the business. Whatever the case it's not on you. Now if you were let go/fired for some reason be careful about straight up lying about the reason. It's a small industry and an informed recruiter can find out the real reason which can lose you the gig. If you have to get into the details, focus on what you learned from the experience.
"authenticity will take you further than spin" lol no if that were true they wouldn't be paying us all this money to trick people into buying things.
Oh sorry I mean "change behavior through impactful innovative messaging that resonates with your audience" *eye roll*
Is ogilvy the CIA?
Were you in NY office? How big was it? Person above said it well. It's a completely understandable reason and happens to every agency.
^dont they background check and see you were a perm employee?
Yes indeed
Authenticity will take you further than spin.
Try not to bring it up
Depends on your level, but everyone knows someone at your old agency. I've been fired once, laid off twice. On the firing, I simply said I didn't believe in my CCO's creative vision and it wasn't a good fit. Totally true. Layoffs aren't great either, though, because if they wanted you to stay on, they would've laid off someone else. Sucks.
What kind of background check? You're not giving references that say bad shit about you, and there's no "universal employee database". Sure they could have a contact at your old agency but most recruiters/CDs aren't going to work that hard and will take your word for it. I rarely even have my references checked.
I always get the dirt if I can. That's part of my job.
^Art Director 1 Ogilvy had a third party company actually call all my previous employers and verify employment status, dates, etc. had to submit two references that they spoke to as well. Background checks do happen, maybe not all the time, but not worth risking
It maybe they just thought I was super sketch
