Hell no
Know your worth and push for Associate 1. Analyst and Associate in IB are 2 fundamentally different jobs, and given your background at MBB, you should have the technical chops to know everything an Associate should know. Heck, IB commonly hires a bunch of people with no prior technical experience as Associates anyways.
Not reasonable, but you should probe about why they recommend this. Is it a smaller firm that is not used to entry level associates? May not be a good idea to join
Even though you’re in the right, seems like a possible red flag if you have no IB internship or other experience. Would make sure they are prepared to bring you in while learning as an associate or would potentially seek other firms
Is your 2YOE mbb post or pre mba , if post hell no
The rat race never ends 😭
Lol, makes no sense. If you were hired directly from MBA you would be associate 1 but after 2 years at BCG they want analyst 3?
Lol it’s like my BCG years were negative tenure 😂
I’ve taken the “take a step back so you have time to learn” path before, and will absolutely never do that again.
Weird that they wouldn’t just place you as an MBA associate 1, but the environment isn’t great right now for recruiting so maybe they’re just hedging.
Fwiw, I have a consulting background and joined IB as an analyst 3 a few years ago. Glad I did bc it helped me lock in the skillset as a grunt before I had any real management responsibilities but I also wasn’t post MBA
Why tf would you move to IB in general, irrespective of leveling
Exactly! IB >> Consulting
This sounds insane, I'm guessing they're suggesting it because you're already a consulting Associate and didn't go through a structured IB internship process / don't have clear IB experience? IF that's the case I can see the rationale but it seems like a big step back to start as an analyst, and what if it doesn't work out after a year? You need to go back on the market with this weird resume where you were an associate level BCG consultant who spent a year as an IB analyst, just seems weird.
On the plus side I suppose it might make recruiting for PE easier, as my understanding is that it's mostly the analysts who are considered for those roles.
Exactly! Even without an IB internship I would hope two years at BCG would compensate? I’m still going through the process atm and am hoping I’m worrying over nothing (could still get an offer for Associate) but the point about my CV if I don’t end up sticking it out for a couple years is also a really good one. Incidentally I’ve also been having conversations with PE firms and they’ve definitely been for Associate-level roles, which is what I assume I’d be exiting to from IB anyway. Struggling to make the whole proposition add up tbh 🤷♂️
Did you get a referral for this or applied cold?
Did you have pre mba work experience?
I wouldn’t take an analyst role then.
I mean what they’re telling you without telling you is that they aren’t going to give you a massive runway to learn.
I think you’ll be fine.
