Tax Return e-filing: Does your firm let you push the efile button? I’m really annoyed they don’t let us at my current firm.

When I was at Big 4 as a staff they let us just review the XML and submit it ourselves. I felt like I had more control that way. At BDO we have a team of admin that don’t work on the client e-filing for us but need to have everything setup in BTU (BDO Tax Userverse). It takes forever and it seems teams don’t double check anything with admin team if things get filed.

It’s up to you to verify after the fact that everything was submitted and accepted. I don’t think it adds value to have a different team submit for you since they often miss forms/submit the wrong ones, but my firm has the same process.

like

Yeah, I personally still verify. But I notice some teams don’t. Sometimes I have to proactively reach out to admin to see what’s the hold up if any.

The big push for consulting in the past 2 decades has been this idea of "shared services" so save revenue generating employees time. Every company is trying to do something similar and it's honestly a waste of time. Just creates choke points during high volume moments where stakes are high.

like

The funny thing about this movement to me is that at one point I started finding hours from finance people in my codes. “We have to show value to the firm.”

like

"Push the button, Frank"

At our firm managers and up can “push the button”.

Most big 4 anyone in the US can e-file.

We can’t for CCH, just our administrative specialists. For Go or OIT we can if we’ve completed a webinar. That will get restricted again in a couple of years as the specialists get better trained on TR platforms. For managing risk it really is the right thing to do.

like

We have US admin. But not always a good thing. There can be a disconnect.

When I was in public it was done centrally- to make sure it got billed and rejections etc were actioned.

like

Not sure why anyone would actually want to e-file, but I understand if it’s creating more work than doing it yourself. Most likely folks have messed up in the past and this is your firm’s way of managing risk. I’ve had a handful of issues in my career where a staff or senior did something really dumb e-filing that was not fun to fix, so I understand the firm’s concern.

like

Many years ago as a senior I had to hit the button to generate a large consolidated return on CLR Fast Tax that would cost about $1,500 which was a big deal if it was a bust and had to be reprinted. Took me an extra day to hit that button triple checking everything. Still did not feel good hitting the button.

Admin are the last step for us as well and I prefer it that way

3 attorney firm. I’ve been here for 6 years and have used Westlaw exclusively. Now we are switching to Lexis because apparently Westlaw is too expensive. I hate change.
