Thinking of making an exit from sales engineering / solutions consulting - what career options do I have and for those who have done something similar, what path have you taken? Any suggestions or advice? Product Management is something I have considered but not sure how to break into it especially given that I don’t have the experience for it.

What do you think are the key skills/areas of knowledge for sales engineering? What do you wish you knew when you started?

Never been in an SE or consulting or B2B sales role before but have a referral at Salesforce and have been in some informal conversations. I’m starting to freak out a bit now that maybe I can’t do it. I have a tech background so can handle that part, but perhaps strategy may be difficult. Anyone make the transition to an SE role that have some advice?

Anyone feel frustrated at times with the super aggressive sales personalities we deal with? My AE is always pushing on every ask no matter how minuscule it is. My vp is super anal about anything we do. I understand these guys pull in huge commissions and bonuses that’s why they are so motivated. However what I personally feel is they just nag us until we do the job according to their spec. Just venting……anyone else feel the same?

Has anyone moved from federal consulting to sales engineering? What was your experience in doing that?

What are some good ways to get into management?
I am an individual contributor with ~8 years of experience and a strong track record. I enjoy my work, but am getting a little burnt out being directly customer facing. I also want a bigger seat at the table. I am not the most natural people manager, but want to push myself and take on a new challenge.
What can I do to position myself for this?
