I make roughly $22. Without my husband's income, I would not be able to live here.
I don’t really know what comfortable would exactly mean, but that isn’t comfortable for me. The single adult is 44$ an hour. I can kind of see on paper when they do these numbers how it might make sense. But for those of us in the real world with a ton of factors, it’s not accurate in my opinion.
I earn $30 an hour and I’m struggling. So I don’t see how an adult can afford decent housing and afford to live in Austin on less much less $21 an hour. I know they are saying the cost of housing is going down here but I haven’t seen it yet.
$21 per hour is only like $42,000 a year. It’s definitely paycheck to paycheck while living with a roommate in central Austin with no savings. If you move out to a small suburb like Manor then you may be able to save a tiny amount each month but the suburbs have grown increasingly expensive and you will eventually have to move farther out (and take your roommate with you).
It’s definitely a living wage and fine wage for a young single person, just not comfortable. Double income at that rate is better and you could save with a budget and still enjoy simple pleasures. Not livable if you have dependents.
I think $30/hr would be the minimum for the average person to lead a modest lifestyle
(My thoughts on "modest" being sharing rent with 1 roommate and paying student loans, but also once-a-week night out and once-a-year splurge on flight/concert/etc).
I don’t think 20-21/hr is comfortable either. But I make 106k/yr and I’m pretty comfortable
