Tips for shutting down someone who takes 20-30 minutes to provide her 5-minute overview?

I hold a weekly round robin for the legal staff. I can get through 8 of 9 in 20 minutes on most days. Then #9 takes 20-30 all by herself.

My boss has challenged me to come up with a way to manage her and keep her on point/task and at 5 minutes. I don't want to be cruel. I do want to be direct, maybe even blunt, without stepping on her apparent need for validation.

Any tips?

Meet with her separately and clearly state that at the next round robin she cannot take more than 5 mins. That you appreciate all that’s she’s doing but that, again, at this meeting the synopsis needs to be kept to 5 minutes. Ask her if she can manage that herself or if she needs you to queue her at 4 mins to wrap it up. At the next meeting, at 5 mins, interrupt her. “Ok, Sue, that’s all we have time to hear about today… next up is… Alex.”

I would say to be direct and blunt. You can say things respectfully and still get your point across. I would reiterate that these meetings are only meant to be 5 minutes and you really need to keep it to a five minute overview. Maybe even challenge her to come to the next one with five minutes or less worth of information.

Had an associate of mine recently confront me and say he has a crush on me. Told him nope and that would be very unprofessional. He has reassured me that this won’t impact our working dynamic but lately there’s been a lot of pushback on any direction given to him or the team. I’m growing concerned he is holding something against me.

How should I approach this?

Need advice - I've been talking to a Partner contact at a big-4 firm where I REALLY want to work. She sent my info to the managing partner in my city, but I haven't heard anything for about 3 weeks. Been playing it cool because I know these things can take time, BUT, I just got let go from my current firm. I have til 12/15 to find a new job.

Do I tell her my timeline is now a month, or is telling them I'm getting fired going to tank my chances of getting the job?

DE&I is now a core leadership competency. If you are managing diverse talent, it’s important to understand what the term “privilege” means within a DE&I context so you can lead your team to higher levels of inclusivity+develop optimal strategies for solutioning around team issues/challenges. Everyone has some aspect of privilege depending upon the context. Privilege means the absence of obstacles/barriers, not necessarily the presence of perks. Though some would say *that* itself is a perk.
