Document the shortcomings before escalating so you have something specific to point to, like email threads, chat records, action item trackers, and other more objective sources of info. Simply claiming things like low performance will not be enough. Also come up with some proposed solutions, like more/different resourcing, or more partner attention in assigning work (to force the manager to do things themselves).
Ask him if you can work with him on whatever side business he's running 📈
..But seriously, set up a regular touchpoint with him, and in your initial one mention where you could use his support. Or a team norming session where you both walk through your working preferences.
The only risk here is that you need to frame it in such a way that he doesn't feel his involvement is hand-holding, in order to keep your rating safe.
Set up meetings on the day when he says he will have things ready so you can talk through it. Also, if you give too much runway he may catch on and escalate you saying that you’re not performing. It’s better to raise awareness with your lead and let them know you are working on the situation if you don’t want to the lead to step in.
