This requires homework, and is best addressed in an annual review setting, not just off the cuff.
Start with your job description and prepare to discuss how you’ve met or exceeded each point. Second you’re going to need examples, bust out your achievements and biggest wins. Third, what screw-ups occurred? Do some soul searching as this will impact your result. Be prepared to discuss and modify your target accordingly. Fourth, what % are you asking for? Can you point to market rates? What amount would you accept? If the $ isn’t to your liking, are there other perks you could try to negotiate (PTO, bonus, etc.)? Fifth, what additional responsibilities are you seeking to take on? Money usually comes with strings attached. Tie this into your overall career goals.
Unrelated to this will also depend on your company and your boss. Some places don’t value Legal and penny pinch at the associate level. If that’s the case you may need to lateral, don’t fall for the mantra of “just work hard and things will work out.” Some places underpay. You can’t fix or change them.
I would add that if your company does annual reviews at the same time they give raises and promotions, waiting until the annual review to discuss may be too late. I would start the conversation earlier in a 1x1 with the manager and frame it as a discussion of what it would take to get a raise or promotion. That way your manager knows you’re thinking about it, and you get some data on what they consider raise-worthy performance.
