Tips to be a better communicator and carry more confidence? Recently got promoted to director and I’m not great at conveying what I want to say clearly or delegating during meetings. Also dealing with exec team more closely so really need to work on this skill.

-Watch the directors in your org and emulate the behaviors you consider good.
-It takes practice. Start with asking questions. Asking questions is easier than formulating your own ideas for now.
-In meetings, use the STAR method. Again, practice is key.

Thanks for the advice!

Communication is such a familiar topic that it’s rarely studied, but the first thing to notice is that “valuable” speaking comes from “valuable” listening. Think about a time you said something particularly insightful, it was how you listened that allowed for this. Listening is a much more creative act than most of us realize. This is an easy fix, and more importantly it’s my passion. I have lots of tools I’m happy to share but for now, I pulled this:

Practice. Practice and exposure therapy are what help.
You can practice on your own, just talk through meeting discussions beforehand or afterward (saying what you would have liked to say in the moment)
You can also prep with someone, especially if you know what you are going to be talking about.
Also, don't be afraid to slow down a little when you're speaking to give yourself time to choose your words and organize your thoughts.

Also, congrats on the promo!

Appreciate the advice - i need to do better at slowing down. thank you!

Oh! Also, congratulations on the promotion! The access to confidence is preparation and self awareness. It sounds like you’ve got the latter part down.

You can start with writing a script, you can even use Google voice to type it for you and make it faster. If it’s something you need to do write away still take time to prepare and write bullet points. Also breath work before any presentations or big meetings. Remember you are there because your thoughts and work is needed.

For confidence, follow Deion Sanders on Instagram and start using him to pump you up.

Seriously. The guy is walking motivation. His bio on IG reads:

Don't allow my CONFIDENCE to offend your INSECURITY.

I love my SO but get unsure....they just went on a friends trip and came back and randomly said going on another one in two weeks. I said I wanted to spend time together so they came back next morning and said let's go away just us instead, which is awesome and I am happy BUT is it a red flag? They used to always be all about spending time together and now seems like I have to remind them to put us first in the past month. We both work hard and have kids so life is more complicated. Vent over.

How flexible is Deloitte with the start date because of H1b processing time? I signed the offer mid-may for July 12 because it seemed realistic enough for premium H1b transfer. But the lawyers seem slower than what I was used to and July 12 does not seem likely. Is this going to be a problem?

I work at a Financial Institution and have recently been approached about a Director role with my prior company. It’s a great opportunity but I have 2 young kids (Preschool/Elementary ages) and I don’t want to sacrifice time with them for career advancement. I would love to hear from working moms in senior leadership roles to understand if it’s possible to balance both, or is it best to wait a few more years? Looking for guidance. I’ve been in people manager roles (in director/senior leader capacity) for the last 5 years now, and prior to that I was a “rockstar” Project Manager.
