Typically you get recruited by an existing board member when vacancies come up - so try to see who in your network is on various boards and let them know your interest. Work involved varies from board to board, but usually a meeting every couple of months to provide advice and direction to management. If it’s a board in the not for profit sector (a great place to start with board experience) plan to be making an annual donation to the organization whose board you are sitting on.
Look at boardserve- they offer free training for board members and have a database of nfps looking for members. It’s affiliated with the United Way
