TLDR: how should I invest 100k right now?
Had a much better than expected and better than I’ve ever done before year last year. All of a sudden I looked at my savings account and I have over 100k in there and don’t know what to do with it. Obviously keeping it there loses me money every day but I find I’m paralyzed about what to do with it! Don’t have any debts I really need to pay down (currently have 2% mortgage rate, and 1% auto loan). Do I just dump it all in the S&P 500? (Cont in comments)

If you've taken care of your retirement accounts, I'd put it all in VTI+VXUS today and forget about it. You can DCA instead if that makes you comfortable though.

like

Agree with this

All in VOO, it’s the best index fund out there imo. Low expense ratio and does very well.

Avoid rental right now if you’re new to it. Stock Market is all you need.

like

VOO is my choice as well. If you compare performance of the funds across any time range, VOO seems to outperform VTI by just a tiny bit.

I'd say lump it into VOO so you arent trmpted to spend it. Also more time in market, which is hopefully low now.

Other thoughts:
Any tax-advantaged accounts you can contribute to? HSA, 401k, Roth IRA? Even 529 for kids?
I'd fund those first.

like

If so should I just put it all in right now, try to wait for a dip, or put it in little by little? Also I’ve been considering a rental property but my local market is extra crazy right now (aren’t they all?) and I don’t know how hands on I can be with managing something like that (just had kid #2). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Great advice from everyone, thanks for the responses. Looks like I’ll be buying some Index funds. Now just have to decide between VOO and VTI.

like

1BTC, 3 Ethereums, ARKK, VOO, TSLA, AAPL, AMZN, GOOGL, MSFT. All you need.

Depends on your plans and if you’re just putting $100k away for 20 years or if you might need it in 3-5-10 years

Dollar cost average it into index funds at a couple thousand a week, this will keep you from going crazy if it dips 5 points the week after lumping it

If you just had a kid buy a EE bond and/or series I bond maybe? You can only invest a max of 10k for each

90% in VTI, 10% in GME

I’ve been in a similar situation for the last few months. I’ve been putting 5k in a week into VTI for a while

Commenting on this to get notifications. Great question!

Why wouldn’t you just ‘subscribe to a post’?

I’ve got $100k in crypto, trying to turn it into $700k on this next leg up. Stop losses everywhere, you can totally lose your shirt too.

Safely, you could try investing in SFH too.

I am sure this is a question with an obvious answer, but does anyone else just feel absolutely trapped in a job they hate because of their student loans? I’m three years out of law school and I still have $160K in student debt despite making aggressive payments. I work in a larger firm (not big law per se, but 250+ attorneys and big for the market). I am pretty unhappy with my job the vast majority of the time, but I feel like I have no options. $160k at 6% and 7% interest cannot be ignored.

I ask because I’ve let my credit spending get a bit lax since moving and adopting a puppy recently, so I haven’t been paying them off in full every month like I used to (though still well above the minimum payment, and keeping utilization at 30% or under).
