I pray myself to sleep each night. Thats been a big fix for me. My mind does the big drift and then I’m out. I also hear magnesium glycinate works well too, I’m about to order some to try.
I like to go for a walk without my phone and then start my bedtime routine when I come back inside. If my thoughts are all over the place in bed, I play brain games until I’m bored. Breathe in, think of a word. Breathe out, think of a word that starts with the last letter of the previous word. Gives your brain something to do until you begin to doze
Brain game recommendations, please!
Playing solitaire on my phone knocks me OUT. It’s been a “digital sleep aid” (lol) for me since the first iPod touch came out. The repetitive motion and very light mental load help me clear my mind of all of those racing and nagging thoughts, and before long I’m out like a light. If it’s dumb but it works, it’s not dumb!
I was the “count your breaths” commenter on that other thread, so that’s another one of my tricks.
Make sure all your devices adjust screen temperature as the sun sets (f.lux used to be a popular choice, not sure if still relevant), and warm temperature of light + lower brightness of your lights around the house as well at least a couple hours before bedtime. Use lamps rather than overhead whenever possible. Smart lights are a godsend for creating the ability to signal bedtime to my body without actually changing my routine at all.
This is a wise idea.. anyone else have games that bore them to sleep?
Rising Star
I hear ya. I’ve been having some difficulties sleeping lately too. I attribute it to scrolling.
I really need to listen to something at night to give myself something to focus on. Any one of the sleep podcasts like a sleep hypnosis, binaural beats or nonsense talk (like Sleep with Me podcast). But when I really have trouble I find something like Huberman or a business or heath podcast. Sometimes I’ll doze off then wake up and it needs to start over again.
I’m helped when I don’t eat before bed (a glass of milk or piece of turkey excluded)
When all else fails, sleep gummies with THC and CBN knock me out. I just need to take them early enough to wake up clear
I have found listening to books and podcasts to be a game changer. I have to be interested enough to focus but not so exciting it keeps me up. Harry Potter on repeat has been fun recently, science or news style podcasts are also great.
Conversation Starter
I’ve stopped trying to turn it off, and focus on using it to my advantage - ie. if I’m stuck on something at work or I’m trying to brainstorm, it happens at night the same way it happens in the shower for a lot of people.
I slow down to 30 second inhales and 30 second exhales (it feels like a constant desire to gasp for more air so probably start with closer to 15 seconds each if you’re going to try this) and after doing that for a few minutes my heart rate drops and my brain slows down and falling asleep just kinda happens.
