I am looking for two new teachers (0-5 years) who would be interested in participating in a study I am doing as a Doctoral Candidate at Baylor. The study looks to understand the experiences women working in the field of education have had that triggered shame and explore their resilience. If you are interested, click the link below to get started: bit.ly/ShameResilienceStudy
If you have any questions feel free to email me at stephanie_asselin1@baylor.edu.

Yes! It’s a text message to a friend or family member; it’s not a dissertation! Also, loving all the folks saying no but posting with grammar/mechanical errors! 😂
No! If you fail to use appropriate spelling, punctuation and capitalization, your meaning may be misconstrued. Also, why would it be okay?
No. Lowering writing standards does no one any good, and it’s a rotten example. It’s a bit unfortunate, but as a teacher think of the image you’re sending out.
The image I’m sending out when I text my friend, “Wtf. U serious? Nah man. That is not happening”
What public image am I showing in a personal text that the other person understands completely?
It depends on the purpose and the audience. Language is about sending and receiving information. Not rote rule adherence.
Absolutely yes. One who has an MA and is an extremely talented writer isn’t less of an English intellectual because they typed “luv u” or “R U serious.” I don’t even get how one could argue that. I wrote a collection of 20 papers totaling over 100 pages for my last 4 masters classes. I also just used shorthand to write sub notes. I also used my childhood vernacular while speaking to friends. It’s about communication and setting. To judge one for texting informally is unbelievably arrogant.
The ability to switch between both is a skill in and of itself. We teach kids of code switching and the ability to speak one way and write another.
If my goal isn’t to impress a bunch of intellectuals and get my point across in a formal manner, who tf cares if i dont use the most grammatically correct statement? No one I’m texting cares about a comma or misplaced modifier.

Well said! 🤩🤩🤩

Personally I wouldn’t choose to do so, however, if I’m doing a lot at once and I need to respond I end up making mistakes or being a bit more careless. 😣
An opinion that people seem less intelligent because they don’t speak formally in an informal setting and that people should always use formal diction, regardless of medium?
People always seem to think their opinion means they can’t be disagreed with or questioned. You can have it, but I can question it and deem it wrong. I didn’t attack you personally or insult you. I didn’t stomp on you or your opinion; though, I think it is wrong and arrogant. I said as much in my longer post to the OP. I simply used your opinion to call out your incorrect grammar on the forum. If that upset you, I apologize. I was simply doing what you expect and support.
